severe flicker problems for Viewsonic VA2231 w monitor

This is a new monitor and it works very well as dual monitor for my laptop running windows. However I have severe flickering which gets most intense when clicking with mouse, or opening a new window or new web page etc.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I have used a variety of drivers supported by linux distribution and the current latest (for 64 bit linux). Yet the problem persists.

I have tried the suggestion from here

How can I further troubleshoot? How do I ensure that the driver has been activated? I have purged by old nvidia installation which came with the distribution.

Not even an attempt to look into this problem in 4 days. There are quite a few such problems being aired on the ubuntu forums. So it is not a one off thing.
