Thumbs up Pulled the trigger on 3D

The wife is actually the culprit, she insisted I choose my own Christmas present.

That's a fine woman I have.....

If you’re the kind of person that cares about squeezing every last FPS out of your box - regardless of how you feel about 3D - don’t even bother reading the rest of this review, just run, don’t walk, to the store and get this 120Hz display. I’m serious.

Ok, got this thing up and running.

The monitor - I have to echo anandtech. 120hz is so worth having. Everything is more fluid, as others have said is very noticeable even on the desktop. There's a slight bit of leakage around the top of the monitor, but oddly only really noticeable on boot up. The anti-glare finish on this otherwise glossy screen also works very well. Colors are vivid, and even in a brightly lit room the screen is easy to read. Text is sharp and tight.

I'm also seeing colors in games that I never saw before.

Nvidia 3d - where to start? How about driver hell?

I downloaded the latest drivers + stereo 3d drivers etc from Nvidia. They all installed fine, but I couldn't complete the stereoscopic wizard. I rolled back to 2 earlier driver sets and had the same results.

Quote:
"Warning: attempt to run Stereoscopic in non-stereo display mode, please change to an acceptable mode. See documentation for acceptable Stereoscopic 3D modes"
plastered in big red letters across the bottom of my screen and no 3d.

After a few choice words I did a thorough cleaning and went with the 197.59s off the packaged cd and breezed through the installation and I'm off and running with 3d.

Only one issue left and that was the physx drivers. Metro wouldn't fire up, telling me it couldn't find the physx files needed. I downloaded the latest and the installer told me what I had was newer, aborting install. I try to uninstall what I have, but it's nowhere to be found. Long story short, the install wizard bundled with the 260.99s kindly offered to remove the old and install the new.

All set now and have tested Metro 2033 and L4D.

Phenomenal - worth every bit of heartache. I love the option of turning the 3d effect up or down to taste via a small dial on the emitter bundled with the glasses. The default 15% is fine for me, til I get used to it.

I never actually bashed the 3d tech, but I was highly skeptical of it.

I was wrong. It's awesome.

Thanks DB, I will do that if I run into any problems...I'd love to see that 3d surround too. Just not in the cards at the moment.

Let me know if you think 120hz gaming is as big of an improvement as I noticed.

Will do. After several of the 120hz reviews I've read I don't think I'll be disappointed.
