Post Front Page - The Week in Review

In the gaming GPU industry, a lot has happened in the last week, which was an important part of the holiday shopping season.

NVIDIA released the 480 CUDA core-equipped GeForce GTX 570, which over the last 9 days has appeared to have cemented itself in the important "best deal for a GPU enthusiast" slot. At $349 with (reference speeds) performance that is 88-94% of what the $499 GTX 580 can deliver, as well as more mature technologies making the GPU cooler and quieter. This newest addition to the Fermi family has video card purchasers of almost all types looking its way. NVIDIA GTX 260/460/465 and AMD HD 48XX/57XX/58XX owners alike who would like to get a little more serious about gaming (and would like increased image quality) while getting the most DirectX 11 gaming performance per dollar are finding the GTX 570 to be a tempting buy. Furthermore, enthusiasts who already own cards like the GTX 470 and 480 are interested in the 570 since it consumes less power, and more or less offers the same gaming experience (mostly more). Served up to the public right before AMD's release of HD 69XX cards, the 570 was a bold move in some ways, as it brought the performance bar up in the $350 price point seemingly assuming that the HD 69XX cards wouldn't be able to keep up. Click here to read the nV News review of the GeForce GTX 570, and here is another from our friends at rage3d.

On the AMD end of things, the Radeon HD 6950 and 6970 were released on Tuesday the 14th. Review coverage was equal to that of the GTX 570's release, but two cards were being focused on, which sort of increased the scope of these articles. With a switch to the more powerful VLIW4 architecture, the addition of new antialiasing modes (EQAA=NVIDIA's CSAA), and a new total of five display outputs, the Cayman does bring something new to the table for sure. But is it just nowhere, or is it also better? As it turns out, the $300 HD 6950 is occupying a bit of a weird slot in the overall big picture for GPUs as we wrap up 2010. Overall it seems to occupy a slot between two basically EOL products - the GTX 470 and AMD's own Radeon HD 5870. The 6970 trades blows with the GTX 570 (and sometimes the 580), and is a competitive GPU at its $370 price point. A good thing - Crossfire is apparently scaling a lot better. A bad thing - tessellation performance hasn't improved all that much; at least not compared to what competitive NVIDIA GPUs can offer. We recommend you start with this review; and this one is worth a look as well.

Well, with all these new GPUs flying around, and Christmas trees filling up, and grievances being aired near Festivus poles, it would seem that there's a lot of new and interesting PC graphics-card-related stuff to look at this holiday season with regards to PC gaming. Enjoy it!
