Smile [Solved] Black screen after installing 260.19.12 driver on 8400GS in kernel 2.6.35

Yesterday I tried installing the latest driver for linux namely 260.19.12, after typing startx the screen goes black and the power button of monitor keeps flashing , as if it has entered suspend mode. But i can switch to another text console or terminate X by ctrl-alt-backspace to go back to the terminal. This happens with both linux kernel 2.6.35 and 2.6.36 and every 260 series drivers i.e 260.19.04,260.19.06,260.19.12.Currently I am running 256.53 driver with xorg-server 1.7.1 on 8400GS.

I am attaching the file generated by nvidia-bug-report.sh as per forum guidelines.

As this is my first post in the forum, if i have missed any other critical information - please tell me and I will post it immediately.

I have exactly the same problem with 260.19.XX. Wth 256.53 I also get strange periods where one monitor of a dual screen set up goes black an then comes back.

Very odd....

Pls post the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as well for others to take a look and help you out.

By looking at the report, i guess the display modes for your monitor are wrong and that is why you are not able to see the display.

Try rebooting in recovery mode and try doing the following.

You can try running nvidia-xsettings. If it is not already available in the System -> Admin menu, try creating a shortcut on desktop and add this in the command line "gksu /usr/bin/nvidia-settings" (without quotes).

After updating the resolution, write to X configuration file and then restart the system.

I am also an amateur like you trying to fix my system. Hope these steps solve your problem. If not, there are other ppl in here who would be willing to help.

I'm having what seems to be the same issue, but I'm using kernel 2.6.34.7 and driver version 260.19.21.

The 256.53 driver seems to function perfectly. If I un-install 256.53 and install 260.19.21 without changing xorg.conf, the monitor goes into power-save mode after starting X. The system seems to be functioning properly other than the blank screen. I've attached the debug log.

Note that I was getting a total system freeze when starting X on any version of the nvidia driver that I tried until I added pcie_aspm=off to the kernel command line. The nouveau driver was working though.

confirmed. this is a growing issue. imho

I am having the same type of issue with my Sony VPCF1190X and Nvidia 330M card

I've now found this issue in two separate threads on this forum and at least one on another forum. Ive been trying to figure this one out for about four days now. It seems like it should be something rather simple that I'm overlooking.

I'm starting to feel like I'm spamming but I'm not trying to. Maybe an admin can combine all three into one thread.

Here are the links to the other threads. thus far no solution has been presented that has worked for me. The forum on fedora forums is where I have posted huge amounts of my system info.

One
Two
Three

again I'm really not trying to spread the thread. I'm just in vehement search for a solution before I leave on vacation :-)
So please forgive me if I'm breaking some netiquette that Im unaware of

strangely the 260 series drivers for windows xp work fine. But the 260 series linux drivers suspend the screen on every combination i have tried to date.

I am not able to try XP drivers right now, but I tried every combination, too.. Also with the new kernel and nvidia driver versions.. No luck up to now..

I am using VESA until a solution is found..

Seems like noone is really paying attention, though. Neither in arclinux bugs sistem, nor here there is no solution..

Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT-1"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
