Using software:
KDE 4.7 mplayer nvidia 285.05.09 If you enable "suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows" in kde systemsettings->desktop effects -> advanced, mplayer will freeze sometimes when going from fulscreen to window mode. Clip info (though it seems to happen on all of them) VO: [vdpau] 624x352 => 624x352 MPEG-4 Part 2 VDPAU acceleration [VD_FFMPEG] XVMC-accelerated MPEG-2. [VD_FFMPEG] XVMC-accelerated MPEG-2. Selected video codec: [ffodivxvdpau] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4,DIVX-4/5 (VDPAU)) Steps to reproduce: 1. in kde systemsettings->desktop effects -> advanced enable "suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows". You might need to reenable effects for this option to take effect (ctr+shift+f12) 2. open a clip in mplayer - using vdpau output 3. press "f" repeatedly to switch between fulscreen and window mode. No need to exagerate, do it for e.g. 1 per second. Mplayer should freeze in window mode, no aditional output if run from console. Latest drivers seems to behave better, in previous version freeze was inevitable when switching from fulscreen. Btw, I use "suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows" because video playback is much smoother in some scenes |

wow, so it was that!
I was becoming tired of killing mplayer every time I switched from windowed to fullscreen or vice versa. |

Also if you kill it via ctr+alt+esc and click on window - the mplayer process will hang in background, you have to send 9 signal to it.

I have had the same problem. I found that it happens with compiz as well on my GTX 465. I find with kwin with effects has less problems than compiz. The problem also occurs when I change focus with mplayer and mythtv , both in full screen.
