Extremely slow X on startup sometimes

About 20% of the time when I boot up I seem to not have 3d acceleration or some other slowdown is occurring. I get only 2.9 fps from glxgears, for example.

There is an error in the X log when this happens:

(EE) Dec 21 10:47:46 NVIDIA(0): WAIT: (E, 0, 0x857d, 0)

Restarting X solves the problem, but is annoying.

This is on CentOS 5.2 with a custom built linux 2.6.36 vanilla kernel, 260.19.29 driver, and a GT 240 card.
