Default OpenGL display problems on GTS 450

Dear all,
I experienced some severe OpenGL display problems with my
GeForce GTS 450 on LINUX, as detailed below. I am not sure
whether this is a hardware problem (in fact many things work,
see 2!), or a software (X-server, NVIDIA driver etc) problem.
Any help or suggestion is welcome.

1. Problems
2. Things that work flawlessly
3. System configuration

===========
1. Problems
===========
With various OpenGL programs heavily using 3D features I notice some
or all of the following problems (system details below), sometimes
more severely than at other times. According to nvidia-settings the
graphics core temperature has always been uncritiical.

(a) display errors: planes, rays, or gridlines appearing randomly in
the program window, when a 3D model is scaled, moved, or rotated.
(b) display errors: sets of colorful dots appearing in the program
window, sometimes also on the screen, sometimes scrambling contents of
other windows. Some of these artifacts remain after closing the
OpenGL program.
(c) CPU usage of X server sometimes, but not always, going up to
100 %, resulting in frozen X session which can only be killed
through remote login.
(d) OpenGL functionality slower than expected (in comparison to
laptop with much slower NVIDIA graphics chip), sometimes choppy or
with intermittent "timeouts", i.e. periods with no response.

I noted these problems primarily with
* GoogleEarth (versions 5.2, 6.0beta; version 5.1 could not be tested
as it crashes immediately upon launch)
-> problems (a)-(d)

* VMD 1.8.6 for LINUXAMD64 [http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/]
-> problems (b)-(d)

* Chimera 1.5, Linux, 64bit [http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chimera/]
-> problem (a)

VMD and Chimera are molecular visualization packages which essentially
render complex 3-dimensional models of molecules that can be rotated,
scaled, and manipulated otherwise.

Some of the problems could already be verified immediately after
installation of the NVIDIA driver (in runlevel 3), by just opening an
X-terminal with xinit. Hence the problems do not seem related to the
KDE environment.

=================================
2. Things that work flawlessly
=================================

(a) graphics programs that do not rely on 3D - manipulation,
and even several other 3D - visualization programs.
(b) CUDA - programs. I tested CUDA with own code and saw large speedups
compared to the CPU - as expected; results were correct for the
cases tested.

=================================
3. System configuration
=================================
OpenSuSE 11.3, kernel 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop 64 bit, Xorg 11.0 (1.8.0)
KDE 4.4.4 "release 3"
Intel Q9550 Quadcore CPU
Asus PQ5D Turbo motherboard (P45)
8 GB RAM
Gainward GeForce GTS 450 graphics card
NVIDIA driver packages tested (with no difference seen):
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.12.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.21.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.29.run

2 things caught my attention:
*you did not follow the sticky procedure:
To make sure this log file includes as much relevant information as possible, please start the X server with `startx -- -logverbose 6` and run `nvidia-bug-report.sh` after the problem has occurred. from If you have a problem, PLEASE read this first

*you have some MTRR issues:
Quote:
*** /proc/mtrr
*** ls: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2010-12-16 00:25:36.786859888 +0100 /proc/mtrr

reg01: base=0x200000000 ( 8192MB), size= 512MB, count=1: write-back
reg02: base=0x220000000 ( 8704MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back

that can be fixed, read this: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...8&postcount=39

Sorry that I wasn't able to follow-up immediately. But thanks for
the notes.

1) I tried to fix the MTRR issue by including "enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1"
as boot parameters, as suggested in the link given. An initial 'cat /proc/mtrr' indeed
seemed to confirm that parameters were now set properly:

reg00: base=0x000000000 ( 0MB), size= 2048MB, count=1: write-back
reg01: base=0x080000000 ( 2048MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
reg02: base=0x0c0000000 ( 3072MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back
reg03: base=0x100000000 ( 4096MB), size= 4096MB, count=1: write-back
reg04: base=0x200000000 ( 8192MB), size= 512MB, count=1: write-back
reg05: base=0x220000000 ( 8704MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back

However that didn't last long. Sometimes immediately afterwards, in other instances
somewhat later on, another "cat /proc/mtrr" would show the problem again, at least
for some lines:

reg03: base=0x0d0000000 ( 3328MB), size= 256MB, count=1: uncachable
reg04: base=0x0e0000000 ( 3584MB), size= 512MB, count=1: uncachable

Furthermore, as far as I can tell, the problems listed in my initial mail didn't seem
to be affected by this fix.

2) I have gone to run-level 3, started the X-server with "startx -- -logverbose 6",
ran one of the programs that showed problems (Chimera, see my original posting),
experienced severe display problems and a hang (100% CPU) X-server, remotely logged
into the machine and ran "nvidia-bug-report.sh". Please find the log-file attached.

Any further comment / help is very welcome. Thanks.

Hi,

no I did not try the 270.18 beta, I am still running
the driver version 260.19.29.

However, for some mysterious reason all of the display
errors and problems with the X-server (going to 100%
CPU usage) seem to be gone.

A week ago or so I wanted to either exclude or confirm hardware problems,
and to do so I tried an old NVIDIA card with the same interface
(PCI-E 16) which I got a sample of. When I plugged it into
the computer and restarted it, all problems had gone. Then
I double-checked my new GTS-450 card, inserted it again,
and quite to my surprise didn't see any of the problems anymore
either. So far the machine has run fine for a couple of days and
survived a number of reboots without showing problems again,
hope it stays that way.

However, it is still a mystery to me why I had all these display
problems in the first place. I didn't change the NVIDIA driver
for any of the hardware tests, nor am I aware that I made any
mistake either the first or second time inserting the GTS-450
into the machine. I can also exclude overheating as reason for
the problems I had seen, the NVIDIA tool (and CPU/mainboard
sensors) always showed ambient or even low temperatures.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I hope that I won't need
to reconnect to this thread soon (meaning I hope the card
keeps running fine....
