Unhappy hdmi audio only working once (per boot) after upgrading from 256.53 to 260.19.29

hello,

just today i finally upgraded my nvidia drivers from 256.53 to 260.19.29. before the upgrade, hdmi audio was working just fine, including ac3 pass-through.
now, though, audio over hdmi is only working the very first time i start x, after that i have to reboot to regain sound. this is a very weird issue, and after browsing through several threads, changing module options (enable_msi and probe_mask), asound.conf and trying most of the other suggestions, i resorted to recompiling the 256-series module for the new kernel.
this might be a workaround for now, but i ultimately want to be able to upgrade to newer nvidia drivers

here's my aplay -l and -L output:
Code:

Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

speaker-test works the first time after x is started, on subsequent tries it appears to be playing, although no sound is audible, also the usual "click" (my receiver switching inputs) can't be heard, so i'm sure it's not just muted.

i'm on an asus m3n78-em, with a mcp78 chipset and a geforce 8300 igp, running archlinux, kernel 2.6.36.
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

bocki,

Could you explain your problem a little more; I'm not sure which of the following you're saying is the problem:

1) Start X
2) speaker-test runs OK
3) speaker-test runs OK # can run an arbitrary number of times OK
4) Stop and restart X
5) speaker-test no longer works

or:

1) Start X
2) speaker-test runs OK
3) speaker-test never works again
4) Stop and restart X
5) speaker-test runs OK
6) speaker-test never works again

Either way, can you please install the latest 260.* driver, and run nvidia-bug-report.sh right both before running a working speaker-test, and right after speaker-test fails to generate sound. Finally, please run alsamixer and verify that all the HDMI/SPDIF channels are unmuted.

Thanks.

hello,

thanks for your reply. the issue i got is the first one you described. the very first x session works fine, every consequent start of x ruins my hdmi audio.

i've attached 4 logs, 2 on 260.19.29 and 2 with the currently working 256.53 driver.

thanks again for your help

Unfortunately, I don't see any differences between your bug reports.

Note: probe_mask won't have any effect in your case, since your chipset only has a single HDMI codec; probe_mask is relevant for GPUs with 4 codecs.

I notice there's a bunch of mode-related configuration in your xorg.conf. Could you try commenting/removing all the following lines and see if you still have the problem:

Code:
    HorizSync 15.0 - 82.0
    VertRefresh 29.0 - 86.0
    Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "TRUE"
    ModeLine "1920x1080@24" 74.16 1920 2558 2602 2750 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
    ModeLine "1920x1080@50" 148.50 1920 2448 2492 2640 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
    ModeLine "1920x1080@60" 148.35 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
    Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes,NoVesaModes,NoXServerModes"
    Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"
    Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
    Option "NoFlip" "false"
    Option "HWCursor" "false"
        Modes "1920x1080@50" "1920x1080@60" "1920x1080@24"
Thanks.

unfortunately, commenting out those lines did not help.

also, this issue is still here on the new 270.18 beta driver.

there has to be _some_ difference, especially since i've got drivers that are working just fine...

Thanks for the information. I have filed internal report #788423 to track this. We will try to reproduce your problem

I have exactly the same problem!

If I restart X, the HDMI audio will stop working. I will get sound back only after a reboot.

I'm running Archlinux on a Asus M3N78-VM equipped with a GeForce 8200 (MCP78S).
Kernel 2.6.37, NVIDIA drivers 260.19.36.

stoppete, Can you please supply an nvidia-bug-report when running 260.19.36 after you've observed the problem. Thanks.

Thank you Stephen for your interest!

Here are two nvidia-bug-reports. The file:

nvidia-bug-report-firstXrun.log.gz

has been created during the first X session (HDMI audio working). While

nvidia-bug-report-secondXrun.log.gz

was created after an X restart (HDMI audio NOT working).

In both cases, X is launched automatically after user login, and XBMC is running.

Let me know if there is any other information that might be useful!

this is still an issue for me in 270.41.06. any updates?
xorg has been updated to 1.10 in archlinux, so the only way to keep my setup usable is by downgrading my xserver, which is not what i had in mind :/

same problem here with :

geforce 8200 (MCP78S)
kernel 2.6.36 and 2.6.38.
nvidia-drivers-270.41.03

By the way, it happens also without restarting X it's just a matter of waiting, turn of/on the tv or something. If I boot up my media center I can play any kind of hdmi audio. But after a while (typically the day later even without restarting X) hdmi doesn't send sound anymore. It seems to work (no errors, speaker test runs nicely) but the receiver don't receive anything.
