I am very tempted to blow away my savings just to have one of these...but then I realize that I would then be broke for a long time...and then go back to appreciating my lowly 860...

Probably negligible. Nobody buys these chips for games...CPUs, past like an i7 860/920 don't make much of a difference at ultra high quality in most games.

The 990X and 995X still has the same stepping as the 980X.

do not buy that bloody thing, buy a new i7 2600k, that is close performance and way less money. (about 330 USD)

Excellent first post, well said. I might even go further and say the 2600K will be faster overall except in the most heavily threaded scenarios.

Well there are benefits to these chips. I mean they have 2 more cores and unlocked multipliers. If the cash weren't an issue then I can see why people would buy them, regardless of whether or not games perform the same as on lower end chips. But you're right, for games that are typically single threaded or 2-3 threads at the most, there isn't any reason to get these just for gaming.

Also, gaming is a niche market, although it doesn't feel that way to us here.
