Default How do you delete windows installer info for a game?

My FSX drive failed, leaving me with no way to uninstall/reinstall FSX. When I run the DVD installer I only have chioces for remove and repair, neither of which work being that the drive is dead. There is no way to install to a new drive.

I've already did a registry hunt and kill for "fsx", and flight simulator", but still when I run the DVD installer it thinks FSX is installed and leaves me with no way to do a new install.

Any ideas?

Not 100% certain it'll work but it's worth a shot-

Make sure hidden files are shown, and then open up My Computer --> C:\ --> Program Data. <--Delete everything in there pertaining to FSX. Then back out of "Program Data" and go into "Users--> "Windows Account Name" --> AppData-->Local" and delete anything there pertaining to FSX. Restart, try uninstalling the game from "Uninstall Programs" in the control panel, likely it wont find what it needs so it'll offer to remove the game from the list.

Like I said, shot in the dark but it's what I'd try before reinstalling windows.

Try to move this folder to your desktop.

Hey Dude

You have cracked it. The "InstallShield Installation Information" file is
hidden.

I found a hidden files in C:\ Program Files > InstallShield Installation
Information > {9527A496-5DF9-412A-ADC7-168BA5379CA6}

There are a whole load of hex character named files as you said and I
removed the one that was dated from the day I installed FSX as you suggested.

Hey presto FSX now installing.

Many Many thanks from a very happy Scotsman.

It will be under program files (x86) if you have a 64 bit OS. You can confirm it's the correct piece of software by opening the folder and looking at the setup.ini in notepad.

Thanks for the info guys. Bmans suggestion was the one that did it, however it seems I f*d something else up in the process, becuase it still gives me an error saying the config data is corrupt, which I don't understand since its attempting to do a fresh install now. Not sure why it would still be looking to windows for config data. I'm done with it. Will be formatting. thanks.

there is a little know tool from MS called Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

it used to be on microsoft.com but i think they removed it, since they started to offer the "fixit" options.

it list all MSI based installers on the system if installer fails, you can simply remove it with this app.

I did try that earlier, and found an entry with no name but 10.0.x.x version number, which might have been FSX. I think after I deleted that is when the other issue started with bad config data error.

Good news though, I tried sys restore one more time and that appears to have fixed my second issue, as it's now installing. I spent hours looking for that windows installer file, so I'm glad to know where it is now. Funny, I had basically given up, and then it's fixed. lol

This is a fantastic application that I used all the time when I was doing desktop technician work. Great recommendation.

Thank you Q, After reading this I thought it was very informative. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put this post together. Once again I find myself spending way to much time both reading and commenting. But so what, it was still worth it!

I use this, not sure if it'll get rid of everything you want, check it out and let me know how it goes if you use it...

Use CCleaner and run a registry sweep.

It finds unused registry keys and uninstaller/installer info and gives you the option to get rid of them.
