Default Fourth core makes a difference?

Hey, all. So, I know that a lot of people say that most games are only 2-3 threaded, but the other day I unlocked my friend's Athlon X3 445 into a 3.1GHz quad core. He came up to me today and said, "hey, did you overclock my PC or something? Games are a LOT smoother now!"

So do games really not make use of 4 threads? (Also he's running a GTX 460 768mb @ 1366 x 768 resolution)

I play BC2 a lot and it uses every core I can feed it. Most of the games from Blizzard, however, only use 2 cores. Depends on the games he plays.

Same exact thing with me.

Have the same CPU. Games increased at least 10 FPS when I unlocked the 4th.

most games use 4. Some use more if they have it. Sometimes its not just about performance. That fourth core can just make the game smoother. I find hyper threading to add that smoothness to COD BO, BF BC2, most games I play. Most will even show activity on all 8 threads.
