Not trying to threadjack , but...it seems AMD is raking in the cash because of this recall.

http://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/2...g-intels-woes/

Even OEMs are asking AMD for product.

Quote:
AMD has been fielding requests from original-equipment manufacturers, or OEMs, and electronics retailers for help and product as a result of a design error in an Intel support chip, Leslie Sobon, AMD vice president of product and platform marketing, said in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires.

"We have some customers and retailers who have come to us specifically as a result of Intel's chip problem," Sobon said. "Some retailers have had to take things off their shelves, so they call us to ask what they could get from our OEMs that's similar. And OEMs are asking us for product, as well.

That's all good for AMD then.

Sorry, AMD is NOT benefiting from this as much as one would think. AMD's graphics division is taking a pummeling over this, the loss in discreet graphics sales that were expected to accompany Sandy Bridge desktops and mobile products is causing more problems then benefits for AMD. They've gotten too dependent on their graphics division lately and it's costing them now.

Nvidia is taking a bite from this as well. All those new GTX560/570/580 sales that would have gone with upper range desktops and ALL the mobile sales losses that would have gone in laptops from every major OEM. The losses AMD and Nvidia are taking over Intel's screw up are horridly offsetting any hopes of a silver lining in all of this.

Short term maybe... But eventually the problem will be fixed and those people will still want / need a new pc.

When all of the articles were written they expected the delay to be at least until April.

Ahh ****. I want to build a SB rig. Oh well, should give me time to buy the CPU, RAM and case and just wait for the mobo.

2500K, $200 (microcenter)
2x2GB DDR3-1333, $40
Case, $70
PSU & Video (already have)
Motherboard, waiting (about $100-$120 budgeted)

I have about $200 in gift cards, so it won't be a bad build for $200.

Well short term indeed! Obviously it cannot last for any length of serious time or Intel would be a bit more worried about it and we'd see a larger push from them to sell older stuff to hold us over. The lack of that push shows Intel is thinking about the near term and isn't concerned with fixing supply of the new stuff since it's on top of it already.

To be honest I am amazed they even did the recall. From the sound of it the controllers would have lasted at least a year or two.

Granted the fallout in a year or two would have been huge, but they could have denied knowing about it. I am sure they did a cost analysis though and the recall was cheaper than the long term.

Well, there's no guarantees they will all fail plus alot of folks myself included only have 3 SATA devices so no need to use the SATA II ports.

I won't be RMAing my board.

I'm using 4 of the 3GB ports, overclocked to 4.8Ghz with a 2600k and I have no issues. If it's gonna fail, I'm gonna make it fail.

If you just use the sata2's for optical drives what can go wrong?
