Default Dell seek to acquire AMD?

Dell buy AMD?

Guess AMD run out of ideas on future direction caused departure of many executives in just over a month over disagreements with the management team about future plans.

Weird. I knew Dell was big, but I didn't know they had the capital to buy AMD...

Sure Dell buys AMD and lose all the discount from Intel, or are they going to sell AMD exclusively, I doubt so.

Highly doubtful- considering AMD's relations to GF and the backing of GF/AMD.

With AMD current situation a lot of companies could acquire them.
Samsung was interested in the past, and I could see that, Samsung already is in micro-processor business.
Dell on the other hand Is not, only reason I see why they would consider acquiring AMD is to make their PCs cheaper. If Dell owned their own CPU/Chipset/GPU manufacturing company they could use those components at much lower price, it would give them a big advantage compared to other system builders. Kind of like McDonalds’ buying their own chicken farm.
Only question is if Dell acquires AMD will the x86 license still be valid?

I'm no lawyer, but I don't think it is. Because there were talks of other mergers in the past with AMD and people were saying the x86 license wouldn't transfer to the parent company.

This is all hearsay, though, so I could be wrong.

Yeah they had whole fiasco when they split from AMD to AMD+GF.

Anyone have a clear idea on this situation where if some company bought AMD, the x86 license could be revoked by Intel?

what if Dell would purchse AMD or majority of it, and simply leave it barelly kicking, so AMD would still exist just Dell would be their bosses.

Every 6 months we have one of these threads.

Quote:
It didn’t take long for rumors about “takeover chatter” concerning AMD to emerge, and briefly yesterday, Dell was mentioned as a possible buyer. AMD shares traded up 4 percent for part of the day but closed down 3 cents during the regular session. Dell more or less shot down the rumor. During its earnings conference call, CEO Michael Dell, answering a question on acquisitions, said, “…we’re looking for relatively smaller sized ingredient acquisitions where we can leverage them with our substantial customer access and distribution.” With AMD currently trading at a valuation north of $6 billion with about $2.2 billion in long-term debt, it’s not the kind of target that would qualify as “smaller sized.”

That would be a very tricky situation. Intel processors employ a lot of technology that AMD holds the patents for. If the license were revoked I have a feeling that would turn really, really ugly and Intel may very well be shooting themselves in the head doing so.

This is even funnier than the Intel/Nvidia rumors.
