I want to sell the 5870 so I can buy a 2500K. You have a 2500K to trade me?

Newegg is not selling any LGA 1155 boards. Here's what I ended up getting for the guy:
- AMD Athlon II X4 3.0GHz
- 4GB Crucial DDR3-1333
- ASRock M3A770DE
- AMD Radeon 6870 1GB
- Hitachi 1TB 7200RPM HDD
- Asus 24x DVD Burner
- Rosewill Blackbone Chasis
- Antec 750W PSU
- Logitech Keyboard and Mouse kit (Wired)

This came out to about $10 shy of $700. I don't see how any sort of Sandy Bridge could've been as cheap (LGA 1155 mobos weren't cheap when they were selling them, and the SB CPUs are certainly not in the ~$100 range)

I see that as a good build... if the x4 is clocked @ 3.5ghz or more. But in all honesty, I don't think a 3ghz x4 will be running into true CPU limitation issues until late 2012 or so. But @ 3.5 I'd say it'd be at high-midrange now and "high end of low end" by the time the guy's ready for another system after this one.

Not only that, but if more CPU power really is needed, then likely a year from now a really good cooler and one of the better x6 cpus can be purchased, and the setup can be overclocked to ~4.0ghz, thereby extending the life of the system even further.

That's a very good setup. You'll be incredibly pleased with it.

Thanks! I made sure the machine was pretty upgradeable. For instance, the mobo supports xfire, hence my choice of AMD card. The CPU, as was noted, can be upgraded to a Phenom II X6 down the line, ram can be added, etc.

I think for the money I did a near optimal job optimizing it for gaming.

I like the build you got. I am assuming this guy you built it for was jonesing for gamage. Because you would be looking at march 18 or around there for new 1155 mb's. I really don't care about sb, it's price gouging for a new socket. I am pretty sure intel could have done the work with the 1156 chipsets with just new cpu's and bios updates. One thing I don't like about intel, no socket backward compatibility. I can't wait for 2h 2011 when bulldozer and sandy bridge-e go head to head. That will be the real battle for cpu supremacy.

Thanks! Yeah, I mean this guy isn't a hardcore PC enthusiast. He just wanted something affordable that can play modern PC games well (since his xbox is aging).

Default Re: Is this a good build?

but the guy can put his cpu into a am3+ mb. Can you do that with a intel,NO! BTW, if the guy is only budgeting $700, do you think he worried about bulldozer or sb-e? He's think affordability now. Like IntelI7 answered, he was needing gamage. When we have that craving, sometimes waiting for too long when you have nothing is frustrating,DUH?
