It depends realy what you do with your desktop but both your options are valid paths.
I'm using my laptop at work as a dba and I'm not doing crazy in the graphics department. I just need a good basic stable functionality realy.
In my day to day work I need to be able to have a number of simultaneous ssh sessions open to db servers, an equal number of sqlnet connections to databases from SQL tools like Oracle's SQL developer, the browser for grid control and virtualbox in which I run Windows XP (mainly for the Office and outlook stuff) and I must say this succeeds pretty well on my dual core and 4G setup.

So far, after a day's testing with the versions mentioned earlier, I haven't had a glitch nor a crash, so it's been a very positive experience.
