Default Desktop freeze with 270.x drivers, Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity/Compiz

I've also had the same problem with Ubuntu 11.04 and Unity/Compiz while using the 7300 LE video card. I've been able to downgrade from the 270.x version to the 173.x version nvidia drivers, but I would really like to see this fixed in 270.x or 275.x.

Anyone know if the developers actually know about this bug and/or what'd they've said about it?

The launchpad bug for this with Unity is ever increasing, so its clear that there is a high demand to have this fixed:

I can add that nVidia Corporation G73 [GeForce 7300 GT] (rev a1) is unaffected by this problem.

I can confirm the exact same bug - the display does not get updated even though the desktop itself hasn't hung (I can still click on parts of the the display that I know have buttons and I can tell they're doing the right thing, it's just that the display doesn't update). Turning off compiz and returning to kwin shows the windows that were just opened.

This is on:
Gentoo linux, 2.6.36-8 (also happens on 2.6.38-6)
KDE 4.6.2
Compiz 0.8.6-r3
xorg-server 1.9.5
nvidia-drivers 270.41.19
GeForce 7300 GS (2 of them running 3 heads, 2 x-screens).

Downgrading the nvidia-drivers to 260.19.36 fixes this issue.

Same thing here on a DELL Precision M65 Laptop equipped with a Quadro FX 350M GPU.
Software base:
OpenSUSE 11.4
Kernel 2.6.39
KDE 4.6.3
xorg-x11-server 1.9.3
nvidia-driver 270.41.06

I also tried nvidia driver versions 270.41.19 and 275.09 without success.

Turning compositing off in the xserver configuration fixes the freeze.

I confirm this bug too, I just found this topic so I pasted my details in this one:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...59#post2441567

but it's the same:
Video card is: GeForce 7300 LE
Driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-270.41.19.run
Kernel: 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64
Xorg: 1.10.2

the beta drivers aren't working either.

Looks like we have to use the legacy versions?

Exact same behavior, KDE 4.6.3, Debian sid, kernel 2.6.39-1 and drivers 270 and 275. Just downloaded the 275.09.04 and will install as soon I have some time. Nasty bug.

I can confirm that using debian packages with the nvidia-kernel-dkms and nvidia-glx with with the beta driver 275.09.04 everything is working as expected. I'm running Debian sid, kernel 2.6.39-1, with KDE 4.6.3, nvidia packages from experimental repository, on a GeForce GTX 260. I can resize konsole, snap it, with compositing on, no problems so far.

... but that was a completely different problem than ours here. I think you chose the wrong thread.
This one should be yours:

no response from anyone at nvidia = nobody cares about 7300/7400 anymore? seems like new drivers broke compositing on 7300/7400 cards.
