Dear nvidia, is this going to be like this? I have to hold back several packages from updating because of you, soon I'll not be able to install programs because of dependency versions being wrong. I just dont have the mood to compile everything by hand. Please, can you do something about this problem?

I had this issue, then accidentally discovered that if you un-check "Enable direct rendering" in the Advanced tab of the Configure Desktop Effects section of System Settings you can get compositing working. It works here with KDE 4.7.0, xorg-server 1.10.4, and nvidia-drivers 270.41.19 (and also worked with 285.03 beta). I realize this is more of a workaround than a fix, but hey, its better than holding back packages until nvidia gets their ***** together. Hope this helps someone else. This is on a "nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)" on my aging Dell D820 laptop.

Please nvidia, at least tell us that we are screwed and we should switch to another card. Or that you are working on it. Or whatever, just speak to us.

So you claim 0.9 fixes the issue, so how come there are several Fedora F15 users complaining in this thread?

Fedora F15 currently uses 0.9.5.0 and was released with 0.9.4.

I own a Dell D820 wich also exposes this problem. I do not have compiz installed on my system; I use kwin. Given that this problem occurs independently of compiz, how can it ever be solved by compiz 0.9?

I'm currently running KDE 4.6.5 on xorg-server-1.10.4 with nvidia-drivers-270.41.19 using dflogeras' workaround (thanks for sharing it on the forum BTW). Without dflogeras' workaround, my system hangs at the splash screen when logging into KDE untill I turn of desktop effects manually (using Alt+Shift+F12).

Untill I hit this problem, I was pretty happy about the nvidia binary driver. To my feeling it is really unfortunate that nvidia doesn't seem to care about users of their older hardware.

Well the problem is the same with Compiz 0.9.5 and Compiz latest git head.

Yes, same problem with 285.05.09 on a Quadro FX 350M.

Running glxgears produces NO VIDEO, even though the frame rate information seems acceptable and the correct drivers are being used. It appears that basic GL function is broken, which would indicate a driver-level problem. NVidia? Help?

Also, a 1 pixel wide vertical line has just appeared on my Dell Precision M65 display, which after some googling, appears to be the result of a manufacturing defect of some over-heating NVidia chipsets.

So not only is GL broken, but it has fried the card. Great!

Are there any improvements? New Xorg is incompatible with 173xx drivers, and on the other hand 270 breaks compositing in KDE for users of GeForce 7300 GS.
