I installed Debian with kernel bf24 (2.4.18) then upgraded to Sid. I tasksel'ed X and installed all the xfree86 stuff, x started fine with the nv driver, so I decided to try out the NVIDIA installer... Downloaded 1.0-4496 from www.nvidia.com installed it (had to get kernel headers and gcc), worked fine, only I had to set the environment variable for the newer gcc, but still went flawless. So I modify XF86Config-4 to nvidia driver and remove glcore and dri. Now when I run startx, all I get is a black screen! I can still ctrl-alt-F1 to the terminal. Well any help is helpful... My XF86Config-4 is attached.
