Default GTX570 pretty loud?

I have a Gigabyte GTX570 with the stock cooler. Runs absolutely silent as long as I'm not gaming, but as soon as I'm into a game, the noise ramps up pretty fast with the GTX becoming the loudest part (by far) in my almost silent pc. Is this normal? Anything I can do about this?

Do you have good airflow in your case?

Well, not sure about that. It's an Antec Sonata III case, with a 120mm fan for the cpu. After about 5mins Furmark, temp is up to 89C, fan speed at 79%. Idle temp is around 70C, fan speed at around 55%.

Might be not enough airflow in my case, have considered getting a bigger case with one or two more 120mm fans.

I set my fan speed manually to 55% and it's pretty quiet.

Haven't seen the temps hit 70c but I have pretty good air flow through my case... not sure about yours.

Could you possibly post a pic of your case? The inside of course

It's your case. The Antec Sonata's aren't known for airflow. They're known for quiet computing.

You need a better case to fix this problem. Do you want a new case and have a budget set up?

Try gaming with the side of your case off. If your temperatures are considerably lower (which I'm guessing they will be) you'll know for sure the problem lies there.

I'd post pictures of my set up but it's under construction for probably at least a week. I'll see if I can get my Q9400 set up in the case and post some pics and screen shots of temps later today.

Your first problem is you're using Furmark. I'm pretty certain you won't see those temps or fanspeeds playing any game that does not have the word "Crysis" or "Metro" in the title. (those will still be easier on your gpu than Furmark, but will be worst case for games)

The second is you have a small case built for silence, as others have noted. If you want to buy a good case for airflow you'll add fan noise there as well usually, so you trade one of the other to some extent. I like my Cosmos 1010 as a case with decent airflow, some sound insulation. I have a HAF932 with better airflow also, but it's louder.

"Pretty loud" depends on your perspective- the 570s aren't "loud" for high end cards. In general, the only high end cards that are quiet are watercooled or have elaborate aftermarket cooling.

If the card gets warm, yes, it will have the fan ramp up a fair bit.

Using a 3'rd party item, such as EVGA's precision tool, you can change up the fan speeds at different temperatures.

The card is definitely audible when under load, but when I had mine, I never saw it hit those temperatures. I think the max I got to was 79C, and that was with Folding at Home running in the background all the time.

The card definitely is louder than my older 4870 and my current 580, but it should not be obtrusively so.

You might want to re-check your systems air-flow to help cool things down more and better. That's about all I can suggest.

How big or small do you want the case to be? Are you ok with a full tower, or do you want to stick to a mid-tower like you've got right now?

Afterburner with fan profile. As long as you get your fan spinning 50-60% before temps climb to high, the noise level will stay lower.
