Default Will the GTX590 escape 6990s sound downfall???

I've been seeing some pretty amazing reports of the 6990 being the second coming of NVIDIA's FX5800 "dustbuster":

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4209/a...e-card-king/18

77dB at load?! I think that's higher than the FX5800U I used to have.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...e,2878-15.html

6dB higher than the GTX480 many ATi fans said was too loud to even consider?!

Quote:
Thereís no excuse for a graphics card to be this loud and, if spinning its cooling fan up to 3600 RPM is the only way to keep the Radeon HD 6990 from overheating, then this product simply isnít ready for consumption.
I'm very interested in the GTX590 as a 3d Vision Surround user, I've seen rumors it may handle 3 monitors online. However, if my cat starts writhing on the floor in agony from the sound, I'll have to stick with my GTX560 2GB SLi or buy another 580. Now I'm pretty curious if NVIDIA will be able to engineer a product people can stand to be around, given how far ATi came from this mark.

Did this really need it's own thread? There are plenty of 6990 threads. The 590 doesn't even exist so far.

How's it going Roadhog?

This thread isn't for discussion of the 6990, I'm wondering how the 590s will fare on noise given the faceplant of the 6990's HSF.

Presumably the ATi guys listened to them before subjecting the world to them, what they launched must have actually been the best of mulitple options.

So can the 590 (rumored to be launching this month) be better? If they manage similar performance, better feature set, and lower noise, these 6990s will be instantly bargain priced.

You're asking a question no one can answer. I still don't see the point of this thread.

I'll have to give it to ATI that they managed for the first time to put 2 fully clocked gpus on one board. That obviously came at a price.
I cant see how Nvidia will manage to put 2 fully working and clocked 580 gpus on one board without paying the same price.
Maybe they'll pull a rabbit out of their hat.

In my opinion the dual gpu board war was gone a bit crazy.

The 6990 is a fine example of pushing the envelope of what is physically possible with current GPU technology. It is difficult to quantify what that must sound like, but I'm sure it's necessary to cool the card down properly. It's just sad that is comes at such a high price.

Now, look at where the GTX 580 is compared to the 6970. If the GTX 590 is truly 2 GTX 580 cores, then guess what's going to happen?

My guess, is that the GTX 590 will be just as loud if not louder. That's just unacceptable from both companies IMO. They need to find a way around this, or they don't need to be releasing something this powerful. The technology is simply too much for our current market.

Has anyone found a video of the 6990 @ full load? I'm currious to see what all those decibels really sounds like.

Go to 11:17 to hear a dual 6990 setup on Heaven 2.1. It does indeed sound like a freakin dustbuster!

It's certainly loud, but I found this conclusion to be quite interesting.

http://hardocp.com/article/2011/03/0..._card_review/8

Quote:
When the video card is idling at your desktop the fan is near silent, unless you have an open case system or have it right beside your head, you aren't going to hear it. However, once the temperature ramps up the fan moves some air vigorously. There aren't any annoying ramping speeds or varying RPM fan noises, but at full load there is a rush of air you can hear. This is not a silent video card by any means when playing a game for hours on end. This is to be expected for such a beast, two GPUs is going to need some air moved. However it is not annoying albeit heard.
These cards are the fastest around, undoubtedly. But, seems like anyone spending the money for these suckers will be best served water-cooling the beasts.

Honestly, if you can afford $700 for the card, you should well be able to afford the water cooling setup to get these cards going.

Ahh, so its barely louder than the 480 GTX that you got a huge boner for and thought was so great Rollo, but your limit is right there at the 580 GTX huh? LOL.
