Default Video playback lags and jumps in Ubuntu on GeForce GTX 260

Instead of describing the problem with words I filmed my screen while playing a video on YouTube
(This happens with local files and with any player, not just Flash)

vdpau doesn't seem to work:
daniel@Helo:~$ export VDPAU_TRACE=1
daniel@Helo:~$ export VDPAU_NVIDIA_DEBUG=3
daniel@Helo:~$ mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau ~/Desktop/testh264.mkv
MPlayer 1.0rc4-4.4.5 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory

(The video plays like the above demo when not calling mplayer with the vdpau parameters)

Video plays fine when I'm not using the nVidia drivers, although it lags when the video is Full HD
It also plays fine in Windows on the same machine (including Full HD)

Any ideas what can be done?
