Computer hard crashing while playing intense games

so recently my computer started to crash, noticed first with crysis 2 demo, I cant play more than 3 minutes without it hanging really hard with a solid color screen and buzzing through speakers. During the demo, my vid card makes all kinds of different squealing sounds, although it has always done this, in crysis 2 it changes pitch a lot depending on menu screen, in game, etc. When it finally locks up, I hear a little clicking sound for a second coming from my case. I've rolled back gpu drivers but still crashes, as well as during a long session of bfbc2 now. What gives?

Find where the clicking is coming from. Open the side of your case and find out. Could be many things. Power supply, vid card, memory, or hard drive. Maybe unplug the hard drives without the Os or games on that and see. Maybe the psu is dying.

Also how hot does your video card get when running games.

last time it crashed vide card was at like 50C, didnt monitor cpu temp tho but im not overclocked so doubt that was the problem. Wondering if that little click could be a relay in the psu or something. Will do some diagnosing, thanks

Usually when the system crashes like that, it is power related, so most likely your PSU is acting up?

well I've done some more testing. Did a bunch of memtest passes and nothing came up so likely not the ram. Also took out my sound card as I read some could act up but this didnt help, still hard lock up while gaming. I blew out the case and fans, no go. One of the power adapters for my gpu is running from 2 molex connectors on the same rail, which also powers a case fan. I disconnected the fan so the gpu could get a little more power but still locked up. Seems like it must be the psu, but any way to test it specifically? Doesnt everest have some type of psu test?

Took one look at your sig and can tell you it's the power supply. 500W and your running 3 HDDS, the GTX 260 and a decent cpu. I run dual GTX 260 Superclocked cards and if I remember they recommend 600W for one, of course it can be lower with a decent PSU and IMO the Antec TP 500 is already stressed before it gets close to 500W; I have one running on my media PC right now; and that is most likely the cause of the whining you hear too.

I run a Corsair HX 750W in my gaming rig, not cheap but proven stable at 850W in many reviews.

Hope you get it all sorted.

thanks for the input. When I bought the psu I was still running a dual core, 6800gt, and one hard drive. It has run fine for months the way it is however, maybe the stress is wearing it out. So you think the psu would still be good in a lower power setup or do you think its worn out?

A lower power setup would be fine I would think, I'm using mine in my media PC with and 8800 GTS and it seems to be fine. I wish I could say 100% that it's your psu but it really sounds like that's what it is.

seems most new power supplies only come with the bith 120mm fan on the top. My case doesnt have an exhaust at the top, only at the back. How well do you think that would work

All that I looked at including my modular corsair HX750W had them on the Edit; had it reversed disregard; bottom unless they specifically stated that they were for a bottom mount orientation in which case they were on the top. It will still exhaust hot air, which rises to the top, but not as well.

If the price is the big issue, you could just flip it over of course.

If you notice, the small writing above the cord plug in is upside down, the fan can be top or bottom.
