Default Is Q4 2011/Q1 2012 a "bad" time to build a new desktop?

I'm planning on building a new $2,000 desktop computer (including monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.) towards the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012. However, I've heard rumors that the next-generation consoles will be releasing in 2012. The last thing I want is a $400 console out-performing my brand-new $2,000 desktop computer.

What's your say in this?

Your $2000 pc will dominate the console. I plan on hopefully doing the same plan at the same time with BF3 coming out around then, and all the great 2011 games being cheaper by then.

Consoles need to keep prices down to drive sales. Even if you build a new machine at the same time a console is released, the PC will still be more powerful. Mainly because they can't charge $2000 for a console.

A $400 console will never outperform a $2,000 desktop...

The question though is, will their be better/more options for the console. There are lots of games these days being developed for consoles then have horrible ports made to the PC.

Obviously there is a niche for PC games such as MMORPG's, strategy games, etc.

If you are into updated sports games, racing games, etc, then consoles might be better. (Madden stopped being released on PC since the '08 version for instance)

I'm more into first-person shooter games.

Secondly, I was under the assumption that when a new console is released, it generally has top-of-the-line hardware that is usually found on higher-end PCs. Am I wrong?

The consoles use pretty weak CPUs -- the 360 chip doesn't even support out-of-order execution.
