A video is floating around youtube that appears to be a leaked internal presentation for their Games for Windows “eXperience” roadmap. After a cringe-inducing viewing , I can now safely conclude that this Microsoft’s plan to attract the people who play Starcraft II, Team Fortress 2, Minecraft and Battlefield is to make them pay for pretty little virtual dresses. That’s right!

The Games for Windows platform is to serve as the bedrock for the belief that there is no room for regular, good old fashioned gaming left on the PC platform and that Farmville, Bejeweled and Facebook games are the way of the future. Forget the fact that the guys who run the Steam service are laughing their way to the bank with a rumoured hundreds of millions in revenue all from ‘core’ PC games, you can even forget that they try to attract people to PC gaming with cheaper pricing, a service that makes online functionality easier for everyone and tonnes of free features… No sir! The suits at MS want you to buy clothes for your virtual avatar, and they want you to share that embarrassment on Facebook for your disturbingly giddy friends to comment on.

Oh, but there’s more… you can now compare your bejeweled scores with OTHER PEOPLE ONLINE! Revolutionary, I tell ya! There’s something about ‘buying useless crap that enhances my experience’ in there as well. It’s painful to watch. Needless to say, you can pretty much safely bet that Steam is going to maintain its monopoly for a while without worrying about competition.

MS is really trying their best to kill PC Gaming so that XBOX360 is the only gaming left.

No news here. Microsoft is a cash *****, and they will do anything to increase their profits.

Steam is proof positive that PC gaming is not dying, but rather, alive and well. It has been reincarnated into an online service where you pay for games via an online account as opposed to retailers in malls. If anything, Steam has paved the way for future practices by the console companies; a fully online experience where games are bought and downloaded from the internet. Gamestop and other retailers are going to have to switch tactics quickly if they want to survive.


Microsoft is trying to do what Steam did; revolutionize a market. What they're failing to see is that the market they're trying to break into is very crowded. Steam basically INVENTED the market and dictates what happens because of its size.

Microsoft is fighting a losing battle. Plain and simple.

They're just trying to copy Wii and tap into the kiddy/family market. Just ignore Microsoft when it comes to PC gaming, they're not worth a toss.

ms can foad, really. I rarely ever cuss, but the first time I saw I had to log in to gfwl on a steam purchase...it wasn't pretty. They don't give a rats ass about supporting pc gaming whatsoever.

I wish someone would raise the curtain on a platform that would make it attractive for devs to dump dx altogether...make ms totally irrelevant wrt gaming. I hate em, really do.

Honestly, I believe Microsoft could make PC Gaming a *huge* success, Games For Windows *could* compete with Steam easily... *if* MS were serious about it.

Think about it, and if they actually put in effort to making GfW competitive it'd help keep prices low on Steam. I do wish MS would get serious about promoting PC Gaming, it'd be awesome but I just don't expect it to happen... almost ever.

I agree. Maybe a Ubuntu/Kubuntu/OpenGL kinda' situation. When MS sees the hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars they'd lose I guarantee that'd be a wake up call that'd shake the whole company into actually doing something that is indeed competitive.

Either that or they'd get all arrogant, turn their nose up at the PC Community as if *they* where the ones whom got shafted then further promote their beloved XBox with an ever greater fevered passion.

The ONLY reason I use windows is for gaming. I'm quite certain I could get all of my songs that I buy off of Amazon to play fine under a different OS. Same with my movies I got off of iTunes... not too worried about those. Gaming however... sadly Windows is the main OS for that.

Ya I use OSX for everything. Windows 7 for gaming. Haha.

sadly no, still no real blu-ray support in either. either nix or osx can truly replace windows.
