Default nvidia-settings segfault in 270.41.03

I am running 64-bit Arch Linux, kernel version 2.6.38, and after the recent update which upgraded the nvidia driver to 270.41.03, any attempt to launch nvidia-settings results in a segmentation fault.
Code:
dmesg | tail
reveals the following:
Code:
nvidia-settings[2477]: segfault at 7f95a7253b90 ip 00007f95a7253b90 sp 00007fff5f842548 error 15 in SYSV00000000 (deleted)[7f95a7224000+60000]
Attached is a bug report.

Hello lacrimstein,

Does nvidia-settings crash with the older 270.xx drivers?

Can you download the nvidia-settings source from ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nv....41.03.tar.bz2 and build nvidia-settings with debug info to see if you can get some more clues?

Thank you for replying!!! After downgrading to 270.30, nvidia-settings works perfectly fine. I also forgot to mention that my card is an 8600M GT.

lacrimstein,

You still have to download nvidia-settings sources, compile them with debug symbols (export CFLAGS=-O2 -g) and run with newer drivers (preferably under gdb). Downgrading is just a temporary solution.

I tried compiling, but I get the following error:

/usr/bin/ld: i386 architecture of input file `src/libXNVCtrl/libXNVCtrl.a(NVCtrl.o)' is incompatible with i386:x86-64 output

You've spotted an error in compilation logic.

OK, here's how you can resolve this issue.

Code:
$ export CFLAGS="-O2 -g"
$ rm src/libXNVCtrl/libXNVCtrl.a
$ cd src/libXNVCtrl/
$ make
$ cd ../..
$ make
Before running all these commands you must edit root Makefile and comment out (just add # in the very beginning) line 169: $(call quiet_cmd,STRIP_CMD) $@

The resulting binary should weigh approximately 3.5MB.

artem,

I've tried compile nvidia-settings from source with your instructions and nvidia-settings is launch without segfault :-)
But nvidia-settings utility from NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-270.41.03-no-compat32.run is throwing segfault. I have standard X setup (I tried remove xorg.conf). This segfaults appear only when exists ~/.nvidia-settings.rc, when I delete rc file, utility is launch correctly.

My distribution is also Arch Linux on 64bit with GF330M.

Does it segfault when there's *any* ~/.nvidia-settings.rc file present, or only if a particular one is present? If the latter, could you provide a .nvidia-settings.rc file that causes the crash?

Also, please try building without the additional -O2 flag, just the -g flag. Changing the compiler optimization settings might have an effect on the bug.

Sorry for late answer but I didn't have my laptop. Yes it segfaults when any nvidia-settings.rc file is present. For example when I remove ~/.nvidia-settings.rc, nvidia-settings is started without segfault but when I quit this app and launch again, nvidia-settings throw segfault.
With "-n" option is launching correctly. And nvidia-settings from source (compiled without O2 flag) launch without problems.

This bug appear also in 270.41.06

I solved this problem by switch desktop from KDE4 to XFCE. I was very surprised when nvidia-settings started in GNOME/XFCE without segfault.

It's happening to me too on KDE4 (64 bits). Very annoying.
