Default GTX-295 MultiGPU configuration

I have a Gentoo amd64 system with a GTX-295, and I can't get the MultiGPU option to work. This is what is in my X log file:

[ 49766.928] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
[ 49766.928] (II) NVIDIA(0): Creating default Display subsection in Screen section

[ 49768.322] (EE) NVIDIA(0): 2) NVIDIA GPU at PCI:5:0:0
[ 49768.322] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Errors:
[ 49768.322] (EE) NVIDIA(0): - Trouble accessing PCI Config Space
[ 49768.322] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to find a valid Multi-GPU configuration for the NVIDIA
[ 49768.322] (WW) NVIDIA(0): graphics device PCI:5:0:0. Please see Chapter 25:
[ 49768.322] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Configuring SLI and Multi-GPU FrameRendering in the README
[ 49768.322] (WW) NVIDIA(0): for troubleshooting suggestions.
[ 49768.322] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Only one GPU will be used for this X screen.

Any idea what would cause this? I'm at work now, but I can run nvidia-bug-report.sh when I get home and attach it if needed. Is there a kernel config option that I need set to get this to work?

Thanks,
Tim

MultiGPU has to be:
ON OFF AUTO SFR AFR and so on, not numbers...

check the nvidia xconfig tool help

Thanks for the reply.

According to the README, it can be "1, yes, on, true, Auto". I tried setting it to Auto and I get exactly the same error.

if someone could point me to a multigpu howto, that would be great. I's like to find out what is causing this to fail.

Seems you have a deeper Problem, that could only fixed by NVIDIA!

If the driver is having trouble accessing config space, it's most likely due to a problem at a lower level than the driver...

Well, I agree, but can you give me some ideas where to check? I thought it would be a kernel setting, so I have tried different versions, and have used Gentoo's genkernel to create a generic kernel, but none of that made any difference. I tried an older version of the X-Server, and nvidia drivers with the same results. Some of you driver experts should be able to check the code and see what is required to access the PCI config space.

Thanks

1) Do you have the latest BIOS?
2) Tried default BIOS settings?
3) Tried nonGentoo distros? Fedora/Ubuntu? There may be a Gentoo kernel config option that other distros do not use or vice versa.

1) Yes, latest bios from ASUS site.
2) Yes
3) no, I haven't tried another distribution. I guess I could try a live USB, and see what that does. It will have to be the weekend for that.
