Samsung to exit hard drive business

Samsung is now put own hard drive business up for sale as it never turned to profitable, they are looking for $1 to 1.5bn to unload the hard drive business. It could be either Seagate or Toshiba will be interesting to acquire it but I would be really surprise if WD will acquire it just after they acquired Hitachi hard drive business.

Guess after Q3 2011 here will be only 3 HDD players left with WD, Seagate and Toshiba.

Surprise to see HDD marketshare fell heavy while SSD marketshare soared and I think we may will see cheaper 1TB SSD in a year time. But it make me wonder how will I able to store about 5TB of data if all 3 players WD, Seagate and Toshiba phased out 3TB hard drives for SSD as we may never see 5TB or 10TB hard drives in the light of day.

DAMN! I really like Samsung hard drives. Very quiet, very cool, and perform just under the cream of the crop. I had an old 4 GB drive that survived a 4 foot fall WHILE RUNNING and didn't have a single bad sector.

First Hitachi and now Samsung? I need to buy a bunch Hitachis and Samsungs before they disapear from the shelfs.

If samsung has to sell I want Toshiba to buy them, I don't want it to go to WD or Seagate.

WD is ok, but I hate Seagate.

Samsung didn't make a profit because they didn't cut corners, and their drives are high quality, not like WD or Seagate.

Pretty bummed to hear this- I'd sooner purchase a Samsung HDD than any other manufacturer. Great drives, and a shame such a quality component wont be available for much longer.

Definite bummer. I've purchased Samsung Hard Drives for quite some time now, and they've always been top quality.

It now confirmed Seagate today have agreed deal with Samsung that Seagate will acquire Samsung hard drive business for $1.375bn.

I can't believe you guys are faulting him so much. It is his money after all...

Not only that, he even said himself that the performance gained wasn't monumental, and the thing he liked most was the proprietary software due to the control it allowed, instead of the hardware it self. What if Killer didn't sell NICs but instead sold thier software and he purchased it? Would you guys be razzing him for that? From what I've gathered the software is indeed very well made. Never used it, but from what I've read that seems to be the consensus.
