Default Slower (Performance Regression) 270.x compared to 260.x with GTX460M

System

Asus G73JW Notebook
Intel Core i7 740QM
12GB Ram
nVidia GTX460M 1.5GB

Gentoo Linux x86_64
KDE 4.6.2 + Compiz 0.8.8
Kernel 2.6.38.2 (gentoo-sources), 2.6.39-rcX-gitX
gcc 4.5.2

-

Problem

270.x are slower than 260.x

Scrolling in Firefox 4 is erratic, sometimes ok, sometimes choppy.

Even though glxgears is NOT a benchmark...

260.x /w compiz = ~12000fps
270.x /w compiz = ~6000fps

260.x /wo compiz/composite = ~22000fps
270.x /wo compiz/composite = ~10000fps

System under full load, 260.x is excellent and fluid.
System under full load, 270.x is choppy and erratic.

-

Tried different kernels: 2.6.38.2 and 2.6.39-git
Tried different options: Automatic process group scheduling (ON|OFF)
Tried different xorg-server: 1.9.x and 1.10.x

-

With NO other changes switching back to 260.x fixes all issues.

-

nvidia.conf in modprobe.d (tried with none, tried with no MSI, tried with about everything unimaginable).

Code:
options nvidia NVreg_DeviceFileMode=432 NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=27 NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles=1 NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222" NVreg_Mobile=1 NVreg_EnableMSI=1

yes, confirmed here with a 240 gt and 2.6.38.2 kernel.
OpenGl performance are drastically slower than 260.x series, example in 3D modelers.

There is definitely something fishy about the 270.x driver...

Spent 2 days with them, the performance is erratic...

2 new versions, same problem.

Seems like performance is half of the 260.x series...

2D,3D,Composite,No Composite... KDE, Gnome, Plain X... xorg-server 1.9.x, 1.10.x

This won't help you, but 270.x doesn't seem so slowdown GF500 series (although its impossible to test it with 260.x drivers)

Everything is fast as it should be....

Is there anything I could try to isolate the problem?

Ok, so I have completed the install of my new desktop (Asus P8P67 + 2600K) and a GTX470.

Same thing, I see a performance drop going from 260 to 270.

opengl apps are slower
firefox scrolling is sometimes slower/jerky
compiz is jerky

glxgears is 40-50% slower

I have the same problem with an asus z53jseries and a geforce go7300.
Different kernel (2.6.3X)and different version of X server the perfomance whit the 270 series of driver is bad.
When i run compiz appear this message:

Code:

Tested lightsmark and glxgears without compositing

linux 2.6.39-4
geforce 9500GT
nvidia 275.21 and 260.19.44

Lightsmark gives 115.45 fps with 275.21 and 114.3 with 260.19.44
glxgears gives about 6400fps on 275.21 and about 6800 on 260.19.44

So everithing seems ok with this board; as soon as i can i'll try against a 7900gs.

7900GS gives better performance on 280x series too for me.

I've done some benchmarks on my GTS 450 1GB DDR5 with Unigine:

Quote:
driver: 260.19.44
FPS: 43.6
Scores: 1847
Min FPS: 31.1
Max FPS: 50.7
Quote:
driver: 270.41.19
FPS: 43.5
Scores: 1844
Min FPS: 30.9
Max FPS: 50.8
Quote:
driver: 275.19
FPS: 43.5
Scores: 1846
Min FPS: 31.0
Max FPS: 51.1
Quote:
driver: 280.11
FPS: 44.2
Scores: 1875
Min FPS: 31.4
Max FPS: 51.5
Conclusion is that my model is not affected.
