Default nvidia drivers in Ubuntu

G'Day; I hope this is the correct place to ask about Linux, I have been trying to get Ubuntu 10.10 to run nvidia drivers for mt 440 card for a week and I have tried everything but no good, on reboot I get to the shell and then that's it, can't get into /etc/X11/xorg.config, repy file does not exist, purged Nouveau drivers, etc. etc. etc. nothing seems to work, has anybody got any ideas how to get the drivers to work ???
Kind regards Miykel
