Default Zotac ION (MCP79) HDMI audio works on LCD monitor but not on LCD TV

I posted the following to an ubuntu forum a couple of days ago but think it may be more appropriate here.

I've got at Zotac ION (ION-A or similar with MCP79/7A) and have a problem getting HDMI audio working through my TV. It briefly worked a few years ago (Ubuntu 8 something I think) and now after upgrading to Natty I've gone through a bit of an effort to try and get it going again.

I've read ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/gp...dmi-audio.html and spent a LOT of time altering configuration files, un-muting devices, attempting different modprobe options seen in forums etc. To check if the TV might have developed a problem I recently plugged in a LCD monitor which has a stereo speaker out and attached speakers to it and without even rebooting the sound worked (using a aplay command like aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav)

I also borrowed a Windows7 laptop and plugged this into my TV and the sound worked so it seems it just the combination of my computer and TV that's causing the problem.

I have just recently seen the following posts and am wondering whether I may be suffering from the same problem which has not been fixed?

Does anyone have any advice on what I can try next to get the computer and TV to work together?

Is there any additional information that I could supply to help with sorting this out?

Just wanted to say, that I have the same problem.
My thread on Ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1757179
Also attached my bug report. Hope this helps.
EDIT:
Sorry, my problem was unrelated to the driver, and was solved by downgrading BIOS.

I have ZOTAC A-E and this same problem. It worked with 8.10 and 9.04 backports of kernel and ALSA and PULSE, but form 9.04 on I have no HDMI sound. It is not related to driver thought - at least not directly. It was not worked with driver I used with 8.10 on 9.04 or 9.10 or 10.10, and it is not working with 270 range.
It has something to do with changes at PULSE (or ALSA driver for MPC) and it's interaction with nVidia driver.

Default Re: Zotac ION (MCP79) HDMI audio works on LCD monitor but not on LCD TV

Update:

I obtained old BIOS versions from Zotac but trying each of them didn't solve the lack of HDMI audio.

After noticing something in one of the log files about a missing pulse audio module. I installed pulseaudio-module-x11 and after doing this I have HDMI sound through pulse audio but not directly through alsa using hw:0,3 etc.

Then after starting pulse in verbose mode and capturing the log I discovered that pulse was using front:0 for the sound output, when I did an ALSA test using front:0 HDMI sound through the tv worked!

Now that I've got this far does anyone know if the hw:0,3 output not working for some screens is likely to count as an ALSA bug, NVIDIA driver issue, something else?
