Default winsxs huge?

http://www.iishacks.com/2011/06/23/r...s-folder-size/

So I found this thread explaining a bit about c:\windows\winsxs and I ran the command there, but still it is 8 GB this folder.

Can I just out right delete this folder?

Interesting, trying it now. The article says not to delete it. Probably contains some necessary update files for rollbacks when you install new updates.

EDIT: Freed up 2GB on mine

depending if you just want to free space on the main drive (SSD?), you could use programs like the steam mover or other that use NTFS nodes (same as linking under unix).

This allows you to move the folder elsewhere while keeping the link to it correct.

It just removes the backup files for SP1 it looks like. There's a GUI based tool from Microsoft that will do the same thing. Actually, after the install of SP1 running "cleanup" from the start menu should list the SP1 backup files. Usually near a gig if not more.

I tried running the command line tool from the OP and it didn't find any files to remove.

Holy crap my Winsxs folder size is now 20.1GB, tried the command prompt but didnt find any files to removed. Already removed Windows 7 SP1 installation files after installed SP1 earlier this year.

Holy crap. Mine was 25.4gb before I tried this. After running the command it said no service pack backup files were found. The operation completed successfully. I then looked at the winsxs folder again and now it is 6.83gb

WHY?

When you formatted c: in cmd then do you realised you just wiped cleaned your hard drive?

Guess you will need a tool like Paragon Partition Manager that can recover deleted partition. Happened to me once years ago when I formatted hard drive and realised I didnt backed up pictures and panicked the hard drive was wiped out. Partition Manager saved my day as it scanned and found partition table then found and backed up the pictures.
