Default Re: XServer freezes on start using nVidia 270.xx drivers on Geforce 9300 IGP

Might want to reflect on this when contemplating the whole 9300/9400 (C79) thing: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...00,2263-4.html

The GeForce 9400 mGPU is based on the GeForce 9300 chipset, which we reviewed in the fall of 2008. It is based on the G86 core (GeForce 8400 GS), which means that there are 16 unified shaders. The only difference between the GeForce 9300 and the 9400 is clock speed: there is a 450 MHz core clock and 1,200 MHz shader clock for the GeForce 9300 mGPU, while the 9400 speeds up to 540 MHz core and 1,400 MHz for the shaders.

Now, Tom might not be right about this but he also might have been told correctly (enough for outsiders) something which is technically true but with provisos. Maybe there is a slight difference which could even affect the Zotac boards uniquely. That and it wouldn't be the first time that a manufacturer hacked things a little (ION being meant for Atom might include some specific customizations) to get a combination to work that someone else didn't mean to.

I have a Zotac GeForce 9300 but an A-E which is the MicroATX version - and it most definitely is a socket 775 board. But it might be true that it is technically a 9300/9400 board and some software reports on chipset & other software (different versions or wholy different) might report otherwise.

Mine is currently in the hell of alternative choice - gave up waiting and bought a graphics card (GeForce GT 440) but even though I can (and I had to disable the on-board video or I wouldn't even be this far) get into X and by & large use this system again without downgrading the driver (and all manner of dependency-linked software - ahem, cough, Xorg 1.10.x) however, stability is kinda hit-or-miss of late. Random lock-ups that will usually take me to 100% crash with video left on the screen (but I can't remotely ping the hard network connection) - once at least left me with Kernel oops lights on the keyboard. Never get consistent causation or useful log entries (I just use this Gentoo system for gaming so I don't have debug or assorted tools compiled in) - sometimes being able to play for hours & later on just BOOM crash.

My last good driver for the on-board hardware was 260.19.44 and right now I'm using 270.41.19 with a base Gentoo system - just using Xorg, XFce4 & SLIM alongside of generally simple application loadout - UT2004, Rune, Wine + a few windows games that you could possibly blame as unstable even under wine except that they worked fine 99.9% of the time with the 260.x series of drivers.

If you compare the downloads for BIOS on Zotac's site for both my board and the one sandipt supposedly received it might tend to suggest that they have a newer version of a common BIOS for the later board. We can't be 100% certain without asking Zotac about any such commonality, but if they stopped updates to the older boards and a fix exists by merely flashing then perhaps we can take it up with them about introducing an acceptable version for the older boards. That or someone could sacrifice a board with a "cross-BIOS" experiment.

Zotac BIOSes available for download:

GeForce 9300 A-E

Version 2K090106
.Fixed IDE port performance issue (UDMA Mode)
Version 2K081201
.2008/Dec update built core
.Fixed 16G memory issue
Version 2K081028
.Initial mass production release

GeForce 9300 G-E

Version 2K100422
. Fixed CMOS Alarm Wake-Up [Day 0 = Everyday] selection failure issue
. Corrected the issue of "CPU Fan low speed after Wakeup from S3"

Version 2K090918
.Initial mass production release, for the Overclocked Version

I would assume that nvidia isn't going to say much of anything until a new driver is released, and even then they probably won't say much of anything. This isn't open source; there's no way they could just toss you a patch to try out, and nothing's going to come out of their company until it's passed all of their QA and other corporate procedures.

Unfortunately I'm pretty boned by this because I have a whole raft of machines that are stuck at an old OS release; newer releases have newer X servers which are not compatible with the last working nvidia drivers. There seems to be no easy way to tell which of the zotac boards have the problem; you have to remove the board from the case and look for the revision number on the bottom. Or you can install an OS with the new drivers and see if it fails.

Nothing to do but wait, hope, and see how nouveau works. I'd say something about resolving not to get screwed by nvidia drivers again but I'm currently also being hosed by graphics corruption on i945 chipsets and some weird thing where mathematica segfaults on some operations when running on any Intel graphics chipset. Things are tough all over.

If you don't need hdmi-audio or VDAPU just go for nouveau, it works absolutely fine in 2D Mode.
