I got my 5800 Ultra in a few days ago and must say i'm impressed at how fast the card is. 1600x1200 and the d3 Alpha is playable, or a big UT 2003 match with max deatils runs peachy and I can actualy play NWN ( at 1600x1200 to boot ) with out CTD every 10 seconds..
just my .02 cents.. ________ Buell XB12S Last edited by OldOfEvil; 01-23-11 at 05:02 AM. |

Its a good card not matter what. The normal 5900 is most times slower, it only manages to edge in front of it only when memory bandwidth comes into the situation. I know I'm happy with mine.

If you want an idea of performance differences between the 5800 series and the 5900 series check out dave's 5900 review over at beyond3d.
You'll see the difference between the cards is 4x aa performance which can be attributed to the migration to a 256 bit architecture. If a game is hurtin performance wise with a 5800 while using 4x aa your best bet is to raise the resolution and drop to 2x aa. |

Love my NV30s. Played with an engineering sample, and I own a PNY 5800 Ultra plus an ASUS 5800 decaf. They do UT2003 and Morrowind fine enough that the NV35 hasn't tempted me too much.

Read this:
http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardwa...ew/default.asp The normal 5900 is outperformed by the 5800U in 95% of the "normal" tests and in 70% of the tests the 5800U beats the 5900U as well! It comes first in a pretty fair amount of tests. It begins losing ground when AA/AF are turned on, but even then, sometimes it does manage to beat the extra 10GB memory bandwidth of the 5900. It follows very closely behind in the other cases, VERY closely behind. That monstrous texel fillrate does come handy.

After seeing UT2k3 in 1600x1200, why bother with AA? As for AF, well, most of the time I don't even use it, it looks better with it on true, but I don't normaly notice at the frantic pace the UT sets..

The 5800U doesn't perform bad with AA/AF, but it does perform worse than other cards. That doesn't necessarily mean that the card is bad. Its certainly not worth going to a 5900 from a 5800U, you'll gain some and lose some, since in games like DoomIII the 5800U is actually faster. In any game where fillrate matters more than MBW, the 5800U is faster.
