Unhappy lockups w/ Quadro 1000M and 64 bit Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15 w/ 270.41.19 or 270.41.06

Hi,

I have a Thinkpad W520 with the display set to "Discrete..." in the bios, which sets it to the Quadro 1000M. With both Fedora 15 and Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit I have had no problems with the nVidia drivers. However, I have had terrible luck with the 64 bit distros & drivers. I am pretty confident that the fault is with the nVidia driver because in the 64 bit versions of Fedora 15 and Ubuntu 11.04 everything worked fine when my display was set to "Integrated..." in the bios, and switching to the nVidia adapter and driver caused the following stability issues (I tried both driver versions 270.41.19 and 270.41.06 w/ the same results as far as these lockups are concerned):

On 64 bit Ubuntu 11.04:

1. When I unplug the AC adapter from the laptop, the system locks up within a few seconds. I don't see anything helpful in /proc/kmesg or /var/log/syslog when this occurs. I am unable to ssh into the system when it locks up.

2. When I try to adjust the screen brightness, the system locks up. I haven't actually tried sshing in under this circumstance. I should mention that I've tried adding
Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
under the "Device" section of my xorg.conf, and it didn't help.

3. When I unsuspend the system, there is a ~50% chance that it will successfully unsuspend. After failed unsuspend I am unable to ssh in.

On 64 bit Fedora 15:

When the nvidia adapter is enabled the system simply won't boot. It locks up well before I would be able to ssh into it. If I leave the default kernel parameters it locks up almost immediately, but if I set turn off the quiet and rhgb options it seems to get slightly farther (and I can see some console output, but nothing that is of obvious help) before locking up.

It's most important to me to resolve the issues w/ 64 bit Ubuntu 11.04, so I've generated a nvidia-bug-report.log.gz for this configuration, though it's before the lockup due to not being able to ssh in afterwards.

Has anyone had success using these 64 bit drivers with a Quadro 1000M? With what distro and version? I really don't want to be running 32 bit linux on this system.

Thanks in advance for any help or information,
- Peter

Unhappy Re: lockups w/ Quadro 1000M and 64 bit Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15 w/ 270.41.19 or 270.4

The issues have been so painful I've gone semi-permanently to 32 bit Ubuntu 11.04 (Which makes me sad -- 1/2 the bits ). Things work much better there. With the previously described option in my xorg.conf, I can adjust the brightness without issue. Unsuspend has been working flawlessly. Based on how much better things are now, I would strongly warn Quadro 1000M owners (or at least ThinkPad W520 owners) away from nVidia's 64 bit binary driver (see versions in my previous post) until a fix emerges. If you need to use the binary driver, go w/ 32 bit Linux.

I should note that before moving my stuff over to a 32 bit installation, I did try disabling the power settings option to dim the screen on battery power, which helped only slightly. Crashes were still far too frequent to bear. I also updated my W520's BIOS to v 1.25 (according to the website, although the BIOS itself reports 1.24) which didn't seem to help at all either.

Do for Fedora 15 x64 OS and Let me know the results

- Set Discrete Graphics in BIOS
- Set runlevel 3 with `ln -s /lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target`
- Pass kernel parameter in /etc/grub.conf rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0
- Create file -

cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf
# generated by nvidia-installer
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

- Reboot and startx

For Ubuntu 11.04 x64 :

This issue is not reproduce with same notebook except Product Name and BIOS Version. Notebook I used GPU Quadro 1000M (GF108GL) , Manufacturer: LENOVO, Product Name: 427625U, Version: ThinkPad W520, Family: ThinkPad W520, BIOS : 8BET30WW (1.06 ) .

You are using Product Name: 4270CTO with BIOS Version: 8BET44WW (1.24 ).

I can reproduce it on 64 bit Ubuntu 11.10 with a 427637U and Bios 1.3.2 -- if Intel VT-x is enabled in the BIOS. It locks up very early in the boot process. if Intel VT-x is not enabled, it boots and runs ok. Nvidia driver version is 280.13. Unfortunately without Intel VT-x, I cannot run VirtualBox, as for some reason it won't allow me to disable VT-x in its settings.

I took at a look at the instructions you gave for Fedora 15, but I'm not sure how to make them applicable to Ubuntu 11.10. If you'd like to suggest something to try on Ubuntu 11.10, I'd be happy to try them out.

If I enable Discrete mode in the BIOS, Fedora 3.1.7-1.fc16.x86_64, I get only one rectangle of the progress bar during boot, then booting hangs. Lenovo W520. Is it defective, am I missing a package?

Good news! Using the 295.09 beta driver under 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 alpha and Intel VT-x enabled, the lockup no longer occurs.
