Default MS to give out new 360slims if firmware breaks your 360

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...are-update.ars

Have to say that is a really nice thing for them to do. If the firmware upgrade breaks your 360, you can call them and get a NEW 360s 250gb model plus a year of Live.

I have a pretty good chance of being one since my box is a March after launch 360. I guess it's time to dust it off and plug it back in and do an update . I haven't used it in a couple of years since mine is loud as a jet engine.

They should just tell us, which drives are affected by this. It would be a cheap way to get a new Xbox

It doesn't seem to be just older ones. There was a mention from Kotaku about someone's 2009 60GB Pro model having the issue.

Well the update just broke mine about 30 minutes ago. Never had any problems with my older Elite until this update. It rebooted after it was done then logged into Live and even seemed a little snappier then BAM the screen went all nuts and the console locked up. Rebooted it and was greeted to 3 red rings.
I called XBOX support and he said he doubts it was because of the update but luckily I have 1 month left on the red ring warranty of 3 years so I have to send it in for repair. He made no mention of replacing it with a new 250gb model. I told him I damn well better get an Elite back at least. He said it would either be an Elite or a newer one.
I didn't think to ask though, since he told me to keep my hard drive, if I do get a new one how the hell am I suppsoed to use the old hard drive since it won't fit the new ones?

Maybe he wants you to keep it so that you will buy the HDD transfer cable from them. With that you can copy the contents of the old drive to the new one.

If they give me a slim with a hard drive in it I'd be more than happy to buy a used transfer cable. Someone also told me I could borrow theirs.

The update isn't supposed to brick or RROD the 360, but the update can break the DVD drive since it flashes it with a BIOS. The new bios could make the drive not work correctly. In those cases, MS will replace with a Slim.

Well of course the update isn't supposed to brick your equipment. What update was ever intended to do that?
The update did brick my 360 though.

What I meant was, MS is replacing consoles where it breaks the DVD drive due to the firmware, they won't give you a Slim because of a RROD due to the update.

When was this update released? I haven't turned my 360 on in a couple weeks.

It's already been released AFAIK. I just powered my 360 on for the first time in 2 years last night and updated. Everything worked so no replacement for me, it's good news and bad news , but I just unplugged it from the wall again cause it's so loud and I just don't want to bother with it anymore. I'll rent GoW3 and power it up then since that is the next time I expect to use it.
