The i7 shines in GTA:IV, Crysis, and Metro 2033 but, all 3 games are playable on all 3 systems.

The X6 trounces both Intel products when it comes to my development environment but that's simply the core count.

When it comes to everything else... there's really no noticeable difference across any of the systems.
This is pretty much my take on the present situation regarding CPU performance.

In certain, very specific scenerios the Core2Quads and i7s, and even some beefier i5s, will trump AMD's offerings. The converse is also true, strictly dealing with very specific scenerios.

On a much broader, more general sense, I really don't think there'd be a noticeable difference between an i7 powered system or a PhII x6 powered system, outside of placebo.

Heck, I've often contemplated selling my i7+MOBO+RAM and just using the Q6600 I've laying around here. At stock I'm sure it'd be sufficient for my needs, and if oc'd even to 3.2 - 3.4Ghz I'm sure it'd be above what I need.

At this point our hardware is pretty much above what the software can use, we need more demanding applications. Software that can actually utilize above 4GB of RAM, software that can fully take advantage of multiple cores/threads, software that can put our GPUs to good use. Untill that happens, I don't think we'll really see a huge difference in regards to AMD/Intel CPU performance for day-to-day, general usage.

I wouldn't worry about that 8x PCIE 2.0 is more then enough bandwith for all current video cards.
