Default What else could be done using this rig?

Specs are as follows:
CPU: Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
RAM: 6GB DDR2 800
GPU: ASUS EN8800GT 512MB

Yeah, I think that should just about it. I do realise the RAM might be overkill but I got an additional 2x2GB sticks as a gift.

At any rate, I bought this back in 2007, mainly for gaming and what happened is, beyond the odd game, like BioShock or The Witcher, I didn't really play much. I just use the computer for regular stuff and the odd game. (like, Witcher 2)

tl;dr: What else can I do with this rig? If it means anything, I am interested in learning 3D rendering and stuff like that and am pretty much open to any use I can put this computer to.

Thanks.

Invaluable input.

If it wasn't simple enough before: How can I put this rig to good use? How can this hardware be "exploited"? Is there anything that's useful that I can do with it? Simulations of stuff?

Umm... do you realise how open-ended that question is? The possibilities for that rig are vast.

You could do photo editing, you could do video editing, you could create songs with it, you could use it as a file/media or web server, on and on and on and on... really boils down to what you're interested in.

Yes, I do. The thing is, I don't like seeing this material go to waste and I'm nowhere near being knowledgeable enough to know what I can actually do with it. I have practically no hobbies and specific interests (besides maybe maths/physics and music), so just throw anything you can think of. I want to learn new things/gain new skills. I've gone long enough "not doing anything".

Okay then, fair enough.

What kind of camcorder do you have? And what kind of digital camera? Try going around and seeing what kind of pictures you can take, what kind of videos you can get. Try nature shots, try sports, etc. Go home and import it to you computer. Purchase a copy of Photoshop and Premier, start editing the pictures and videos- see if that gets interesting for you.

Purchase something like Acid Music Maker and start seeing what kinds of songs you can put together.

I'd start there. Give yourself maybe half a year or so of just dabbling with these things. By that time you should have a good idea if any of it will interest you.

we can't tell you how to use your computer. it is not our computer. The uses that an above average computer can do better than an average computer are pretty limitless.
I think that if you are asking what to do with a computer, you don't really need the computer. You don't see people on the cell phone forums going: "I got this amazing phone, but I don't know what to do with it" or a person on a car forum going "I got X model of car, what is it good for".
Your specs are getting a little aged, but your computer is still much better than most out there, i think.
Also, just because you got a good rig, doesn't mean you are not allowed to do regular stuff on it like watching movies, listening to music, pornography, etc etc. Your computer will run source-based games well, HL2, TF2, dead space should run ok i think. Cod4, Cod W@W...

I will invest in a better camera soon enough. All I have is a camera on my phone. I do have an interest in photography. What kind of tutorial could you recommend for Photoshop and Premier? I'd be up to do some "stick poking"/fiddling with it but a tutorial would give me a better idea of "how to do things", I suppose.

Acid seems like a very nifty piece of software. Thanks a bunch for that. I could try make my own backing tracks.

You make a fair point. However I find it's beside the scope of this thread - if I get into the "why" of the question, I also get into too much personal stuff that I honestly, do not want to get into. I do appreciate it that anyone bothered to take the time to reply.

Yeah, I imagine it would be so. I don't mind playing any game on medium/low settings, so long as they're worth the time.

If you'd like to do some light gaming, I totally don't mind sharing with you names of titles of some good games for that rig.
Best of luck.

Fire away! (preferably something that is story driven which does not have annoying game mechanics)
