Default Should 24fps content be quite this bad on a 50/60Hz set?

I know I should expect some judder but blu-ray content (vdpau) at either 50/60Hz is pretty unwatchable during long panning scenes. Is this likely to be mplayer handling the conversion poorly, or is it possibly driver related?

How do tv broadcasters convert 24fps film content to 50Hz so well, judder is practically non existent during films on free-to-air HDTV?

My TV is a PAL UK 1080p50 native

Code:

"1920x1080"          : 1920 x 1080 @  50.0 Hz  (from: EDID)
 "1920x1080_50"       : 1920 x 1080 @  50.0 Hz  (from: EDID)
 "1920x1080_60"       : 1920 x 1080 @ 59.94/60 Hz (CEA-861B Format 16) (from: EDID)
Are the modes reported by EDID what the screen will accept or what it can actually display? Can I pass 24Hz to it (no 24hz in edid) and let it convert to 50Hz to see if it does a better job than the player software?

Thanks
