Default 1920x1080 framebuffer with GT216

I am trying to set up a 1920x1080 framebuffer with Nvidia GT220 on Ubuntu 11.04. The background is to run Virtualbox fullscreen. Due to an old linux guest system, I cannot install the guest addition which provides this functionality. Right now Virtualbox runs in a 1280x720 framebuffer which is the highest resolution reported by vbe_modes. However, hwinfo --framebuffer says that the card provides a 24bit 1920x1200 mode (0x37d). I tried to activate it via GRUB2 but without success. Any hints are appreciated.
