Default No screensaver when GL app open?

Ever since I had to switch watching video to use GL for video output I notice my screensaver doesn't come on as long as the video player (mplayer) is open.

This is not related to the regular X11 screensaver. I made sure that all xset(1) settings are still set to do the screensaving. It looks like something is suppressing the screensaver while an OpenGL app is open.

Did somebody else observe this?

Would using vdpau improve the situation? I noticed that CPU usage is exactly the same when using vdpau and gl and I figured they translate to the same thing in the end. I picked gl because vdpau was showing some artifacts.
