I haven't noticed much difference between 2000 and XP although I didn't use 2000 for long and I don't think I used any of the advanced features.
XP has speech recognition (or maybe this is because I have WinXP) though if you want to use that.

I was using 2000 but decided to go with XP. I see no difference between the two expect for some minor tweaks and graphical improvements (or changes).

I'd go with XP if you have the opportunity, but 2000 is also excellent since it is what most people use today.

Oh and btw, hi south shore neighbor !

Thumbs up

Biggest differences I've noticed between the two:

1) XP has that crappy activation crap in it (can you say MS hassles), and
2) XP seems more efficient. It loads faster (app vs. app), and just seems snappier somehow.
3) Minor tweaks to graphics interfaces and layouts (mainly the types of buttons on the button bar, etc. Things are generally in the same areas of the apps though).

If you can really afford it, I prefer XP for #2, but Office2K works great too, just not so snappy or efficient as XP.
