Default suse 8.0, 1.0-4496 X server crash , Geforce 4 Ti 4200

I have rebuilt from the rpm src files both NVIDIA_GLX and NVIDIA_kernel using downloaded files (from nvidia's driver download site) :-

NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4496.src.rpm and NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4496.src.rpm.

I do init 3 and then I install the above built rpms and I do switch2nvidia and switch2nvidia_glx init 5. The Nvidia splash screen appears and even I get briefly the gdm login screen but then the x server crashes.

Linux : Suse 8.0
Xfree86 Version : 4.2.99.1 (my own compiled version)
Video card : Creative geforce 4 ti 4200 (64MB)
M/B : MSI 6167 (chipset AMD 751)
Processor : AMD Athlon 500 MHz (Slot A)
Screen : Apple 23" LCD

By the way I tried the pre-built suse 8.0 kernel and glx rpms but then when nvidia.o (via init 5) is loaded I get null pointer exception plus alot of kernel stack errors. Therefore I have rebuilt from rpm src.

The above problem is also valid for nvidia drivers version 4191.
I have used both Option "NvAGP" "0" and #Option "NvAGP" "1".

Any ideas what I should do now?

XF86Config :-

Default got similar problem

I've got a similar problem on a similar system, see post "X unstable with 44.96".

What has helped me so far is to log in from a remote terminal and kill the X server again, after the typical crash within the first 0-2 minutes after starting X.

After X has been killed and starts anew, it's normally stable.

Well, that's not the solution one is looking for, but maybe it helps a bit to trace down the problem.

Thanks for your tip johannesprix but I don't even seem to get as far as X starting as indicated by
the following lines in /var/log/warn

Aug 14 19:49:04 linux gdm[1688]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
Aug 14 19:49:09 linux gdm[1711]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
Aug 14 19:49:17 linux gdm[1728]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
Aug 14 19:49:26 linux gdm[1745]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
Aug 14 19:49:37 linux gdm[1683]: Failed to start X server several times in a short time period; disabling display :0

I wonder since I compliled my own Xfree from source if this has anything to do with the
problem. As I said I also get this problem drivers version 4191. So I think for me something else
in my system is wrong.
