Another quick thought.....

This guy

got it going using the vesa driver. OK, you lose the accelerated features on the nvidia card, but it might help isolate the problem. He was using Mandrake, but it should make absolutely no difference, the vesa driver is standard.

Once it is running well, the same modelines etc would apply to the nvidia accelerated driver.
