Default Motherboard or CPU problem?

At present I have

Motherboard: EVGA E758-TR 3-Way SLI
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 LGA 1366

Via trial and error I know that the memory slot 3 on my motherboard does not work.
It causes BSODs when it does boot up and most of the times it does not even POST. It keeps giving me me a C1 error.

So my question is, is there anyway for me to figure out if it is the CPU fault or the motherboard fault? The memory controller resides on the CPU does it not? Could it be another component on the motherboard that has gone?

Any help in debugging this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
