remove or comment out the following line in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Code:
Load "dri"
make sure you have done.
Code:
emerge nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia
If it still does not work post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Uncomment the dri module in your xorg.conf, it isn't needed by the nvidia-drivers and if used, it will b0rk your X ;-)

As for your edid's problem: u can try to add this to xorg.conf in section "card0"

Option "UseEdidFreqs" "0" # This disables the use of edid's defined by your monitor

or

Option "IgnoreEDID" "1" # This will instruct X to ignore Edid's defined by your monitor and solely use the ranges specified in your xorg.conf

Most likely, the last option will be the most effective, cause it has been implemented by nvidia to control monitors, which lie about their Edid's...

Here's the official section bout these 2 options from the nvidia readme:
Quote:
Option "UseEdidFreqs" "boolean"
This option causes the X server to use the HorizSync
and VertRefresh ranges given in a display device's EDID,
if any. EDID provided range information will override
the HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges specified in the
Monitor section. If a display device does not provide an
EDID, or the EDID does not specify an hsync or vrefresh
range, then the X server will default to the HorizSync
and VertRefresh ranges specified in the Monitor section.

Option "IgnoreEDID" "boolean"
Disable probing of EDID (Extended Display Identification
Data) from your monitor. Requested modes are compared
against values gotten from your monitor EDIDs (if any)
during mode validation. Some monitors are known to lie
about their own capabilities. Ignoring the values that
the monitor gives may help get a certain mode validated.
On the other hand, this may be dangerous if you do not
know what you are doing. Default: Use EDIDs.

And your point being as to replying to the problem of the starter of this thread?
Or r u trying to start a new problem in this thread?
Stay relevant here... Hate it when ppl continuously try to ask solutions for their problems in threads which have nothing to do with the original poster's problem!

If you read the 3 other posts i have put on this subject, and also the posts on numerous other linux forums I have done, you will find out that its an underlying problem which many users are having with certain cards, of which there is no definitive solution from nvidia which says "just do this"

I have posted a bug report, along with a few other people, to nvidia to make them aware of this problem.

Unfortunately, I sent my card back to my vendor, as I am not paying 250.00 for a card which does not work as it says it does

Splink,

I've seen your random posting and a 'black screen' can be anything, can it?
You post here with the notion he's having a black screen, but u haven't looked at what the underlying problem of this person was: EDID's! No Xid 11 or other segfaults, but EDID's... (Btw: the original poster NEVER mentioned a black screen, but shutdown of his monitor, which has nothing to do with a nvidia-card lol. Except for the fact they have a work-around for monitors behaving badly)

You want to tell me that it's the same? Be my guest, dear sir... Give me the proof, that your problem and his indeed is the same! Just because nvidia wasn't working for u, doesn't give u the right to behave the way u do now... And your demand for help isn't very nice 2, drivers take time to develope m8...

Hi,

taking back yur card is the best thing, you can do. Put it onto the counter and tell them, that the card's bios suck and you want one with a good one.

Btw, some people with black screen&Xids just need to switch the NvAGP option...
