Angry Black and White Interleaved lines after upgrade to 4496

Before upgrade, everything works fine.
I downloaded the 4496 driver installer, and type init 5, the nvidia splash screen appears a couple of times
and then the screen locks with black and white interleaved lines. the whole system is locked - i had to do a hard reboot.

The log has an error:
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module GLcore
(II) UnloadModule: "GLcore"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (module does not exist, 0)

after i reboot and run the 4363 installer, everything works fine again
