Default problem with 32-bit mode

my X server doesn't run in 32-bit mode
it says driver doesn't support such a mode
is that true?

That's correct. Please read the driver README about it. In short 32bit Windows != 32bit Xfree86. On Windows 32bit means a depth of 24bit with an extra 8bit alpha buffer. On xfree86 32bit would mean 2^32 colors.

What is 24bit on Xfree86 is what is 32bit on Windows.

Default pixel format

What Xfree wants to know is the color depth, namely 24 bits, and NOT the memory pixel format, namely 32 bits(xfree detects that for you in theory).
