My board is a MSI 420 K7N Pro w/ nVidia nForce chipset for sound and ethernet.
X is running fine, but I've yet to get any sound. The file I used was NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0236.src.rpm 1) Gave this command: #rpm --rebuild NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0236.src.rpm 2) cd'ed into /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 3) Gave command: #rpm -ivh NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0236.i386.rpm Driver installed w/o any error. 4)Ran this to configure s/card: #sndconfig [PCI Probe Results] A sound card was found in your system. The details are: Model: nVidia Corporation| unknown device 10de:01b0 The nVidia Corporation| unknown device 10de:01b0 is not supported Took a look into /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/sound and there is a nvaudio.o file (There's also a file w/ a name of nvaudio.o~) Tried insmod that file and got this error Warning: loading nvaudio.o will taint the kernel: no license nvaudio.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters Apparently, something's wrong w/ the card IO or IRQ. What do I do to get the correct settings? Do I need to recompile my kernel? It seems that everytime I recompile the kernel X wont want to start again. The only luck i've had w/ X is without a kernel recompile. Any suggestions are appreciated ![]() Thanx. ps / lsmod gave me this list : Module Size Used by Tainted: P nls_iso8859-1 3488 1 (autoclean) nls_cp437 5120 1 (autoclean) vfat 12092 1 (autoclean) fat 37432 0 (autoclean) [vfat] i810_audio 23008 1 (autoclean) ac97_codec 11936 0 (autoclean) [i810_audio] soundcore 6692 2 (autoclean) [i810_audio] NVdriver 1067552 10 (autoclean) binfmt_misc 7556 1 autofs 12132 0 (autoclean) (unused) ipchains 43528 7 ide-cd 30272 0 (autoclean) cdrom 32224 0 (autoclean) [ide-cd] usb-ohci 20736 0 (unused) usbcore 73216 1 [usb-ohci] ext3 67136 2 jbd 49400 2 [ext3] |

You don't have to use the nforce audio module. The i810 audio module works too. The driver supports the nforce but I think RH made a misstake. I think they forgot or didn't know that the nforce audio stuff works with the i810 driver and because of that sndconfig doesn't support it.

Thanx.
But what do I need to do now? Would removing NVIDIA_nforce package do the trick? And do I need to run sndconfig again after it has been removed? Thanx again. |

Thanx a lot Tbird.
Now I've got nForce working fine. You're right. with the nForce driver installed sndconfig had a problem configuring the correct h/ware, at least that's what I understood. I just removed the package #rpm -e NVIDIA_nforce and reran sndconfig #sndconfig --noprobe and chose Intel AC97 from the list. And there was a little sound test and now all is fine! Thanx for the info, mate Xine is cool! For the first I watched a movie in Linux! Phantom Menace XMMS runs fine in KDE 3.0, but it doesnt give any output sound in Gnome. I/O sound settings are both the same in KDE and Gnome. And I've tried different settings in Gnome, but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanx. |

as how i understand it, when nforce kernel drivers are properly installed (no errors whatsoever..) it patches the i_810 drivers for audio. and the nvidia manual asks you to add an alias to i_810 named nvudio. this is what you load to get the sound properly in everything. if you remove nvidia kernel, you'll be left with the unpatched i_810 (i guess) and that might work partially well. so the best solution is to keep the nvidia kernel drivers (else you'll lose lan and USB) and use the patched i_810 drivers.
visit http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=29, we just started a dedicated nForce-Linux topic there that has a detailed installation guide. -Venkat. |
