Exclamation Re: firefox slow, jerky scrolling and misaligned pages while scrolling. Gnome3+Debian

i recently install nvidia driver in openSUSE 12.1. now i have some problems:
firefox scrolling now is slower than before the installation, also when i start firefox system freeze for about 5 seconds also when i try to exit system from screen saver it freezes for some seconds.
but i tested a game that was slow before installing nvidia driver and i saw that it is faster than before now and run better.

i attached 2 files:

1- "nvidia-bug-report.sh" result.
2- "man nv" result

also the result of "cat /etc/SuSE-release" is below:

Code:
# cat /etc/SuSE-release
openSUSE 12.1 (i586)
VERSION = 12.1
CODENAME = Asparagus
other useful information are following:

OS Information
OS: Linux 3.1.0-1.2-default i686
Current user: ali@linux-ynrs.site
System: openSUSE 12.1 (i586)
KDE: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) "release 5"

Display Info
Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: GeForce 8400M GS
2D driver: nvidia
3D driver: NVIDIA 290.10

also i should add that i used "nomodset kernel parameter on boot", and "uninstalled nouveau driver" and change "NO_KMS_IN_INITRD" to yes.

please help me,
Thanks.

Same problem here with new driver 295.20 under GNOME Shell 3.2 (ubuntu 11.10), as praka123 reported.
Problem persists even under Unity 3D session.

@Praka: Yesterday I've installed GNOME Shell 3.3.90 from ricotz's testing ppa and with today's updates of cogl packages firefox scrolling works much better.
I've installed nvidia 275.43 driver.
Why don't you give it a try?

I am on Debian Gnu/Linux and Ubuntu repository, will not want to try. however, I will try with Linuxmint which I have.

@devels: since, debian/gnome bts is not taking care of this bugreport, I appreciate a word from You if this bug has the scope getting fixed sooner or later?

@lui75: thanks for the idea regarding cogl. so, libcogl5(clutter) may be the core issue with slow/garbled 3D rendering.

I have gone through gnome-shell-3.3.x mailing list details and I haven't read anywhere they fixed this bug in mutter. if You have, please share. also, gnome-shell/mutter is at 3.3.90 meaning an imminent release of Gnome-3.4(even number=release)

Thanks.

Hi,

I experienced the same problems with a new install of OpenSuse 12.1 and nvidia driver 295.20 64bit.

What solved it for me, was to change the PowerMizer settings of the GPU. This can be done via nvidia-settings tool (change PowerMizer Preferred Mode to: Prefer Maximum Performance). This will not be sticky, so you will have to do that after each login to your DE.

You can also permanently change it in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device[0]"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVidia"
BoardName "GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2048MB"
    Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefault=0x2; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x2"
    BusID "2:0:0"
EndSection
There are at least three performance modes you can set this way. This one is the middle one, which does the trick for me.

I found this piece of information on this site, more explanations there:

Jim

@jim.lahey: it doesn't worked. the problem is persistent and I am almost sure, it is a issue of window manager issue. still, awaiting solution.

I tried bleeding edge gnome3(3.3.9) shell along with mutter,cogl8 and other dependencies installed from ricotz ppa just to see if this bug is fixed. it is still prevalent in mutter-3.3.9 .

I am attaching nvidia bug report along with this post.

@praka123

You're probably right, fiddling with PowerMizer does not solve the original issue, it just mitigates its effects be increasing GPU computational power.

I don't think that it's a Window Manager problem, as it can be reproduced with gdm, kdm, xfwm4 and probably a bunch of others. I assume it's either Xorg <-> nvidia or kernel 3 <-> nvdida.

Yours,

Jim

Is there a bug report filled? I have the same problem in Debian Testing with Gnome Shell 3.2.2.1-1

I have this card:

VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C73 [GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i] (rev a2)

If there is a bug report, I would like to add a confirmation.

Thanks

Yes. You can see the first post for Debian bug report send.
anyways, here is the link:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=656334

I am using Gnome in fallback mode now. No fix even with Gnome-3.4 or from Nvidia. even with mutter 3.3.9 no changes observed. is this a Xorg issue? Can anyone confirm if this issue is faced with Kde or any other Desktop Env using 3D driver.
Thanks.
