Well, my logic is this-

I really want one of the upcoming 7-series from AMD. However, it is not a given that they'll be awesome as the 4800, 5800s, and 6000s were. After what happened with Bulldozer and the subsequent lay offs, I fear for the 7 series, that they may not be all I've hoped they'd be.

The 5870 will roughly double the performance of my 4800 while consuming just as much electricity under load and running just as cool. However, the 4800 has atrocious idle power consumption, the 5870 does not. So I'll be getting more for my money while gaming, while saving money when idle. My power bill went up about $10 per month since I've had this 4870. Not the end of the world no but... the 5870 just seemed smarter especially at the OP's asking price.

Not only that, if the 7 series is a flop I'll rock this 5870 till something more to my liking is available.

The 5870 is a good purchase, but the 7 series will not be a flop.

AMD's GPU engineers are still employed and going strong, unlike their CPU counterparts.

WHAAAAA?!?!?!?! HAPOOH- I DEMAND A REFUND!!!!

KIDDING. Nah, I've got plans for this 5870 if the 7 series is as awesome as I'm anticipating so it's not money wasted either way. Great short-term upgrade if the 7-series do pan out, great long-term upgrade if the 7-series don't pan out.

Oh don't get me wrong, the 5870 is a fantastic card (see sig hehe). I'm just letting you know that I don't think the 7 series will flop.

Nice!

Well, I'm still optimistic for the 7-series but I did read that part of the 1400 employees AMD let go included some of the GPU engineers. Hence my concern.

Well the rumors suggest that the part has been taped out for a while now, so no need to have 30 engineers sit around while they have no projects for them. The big thing is that it sounds like they will be able to ramp up the clock speeds on 28nm, so there should be some pretty significant gains to be made. If they increase the shader count by 50% (2400SP) and clock speeds are around 1ghz there should be some pretty fast parts.

The HD5870 is still going to be a rock solid card though, even when the new stuff comes out. The other big thing is that even if the new card is 2x faster, the card itself is going to cost 4x as much.

Well, my focus is on the ~$200 parts. "7770" or "7870" if they go with the 6000 series naming scheme.

I know from the preliminary reports that the 7 series is supposed to pretty amazing, but the same was said about bulldozer. Difference being ATi has several years of delivering on their promises, AMD can't claim that with their CPUs.

So I'm still optimistic however, this 5870 is more of a "defensive posture" where if the 7 series don't pan out I've got a card that'll last me a while. If they do pan out I'll buy the card I want. Win-win for me. $90 was too good to pass up considering the performance gains I'll get and electrical savings from the 5870's considerably lower idle power consumption compared to my 4870.
